Planted Tropheus Tank (with Co2)

Finally the timing is right to add some Ts. in to my planted tank I've rearranged as much as i can so it's easy to maintain, and to minimize stress to the Ts. I've decided to inject Co2 at half the normal rate and slowly increase with time. I am adding them in the morning when there is no Co2 present/added in to the tank. Previously i have added cardinals during the day when Co2 is at full strength and noticed quite a bit of discomfort. I have Metro on hand and i am thinking of treating them as a precaution. I have medicated with Clout previously but not with Metro, so i am hoping it'll be as good. I have had two colonies of Ts in the past ( Ilangi's and Moliro's) and never lost a single Ts. for bloat, but i treated with Clout as soon as they were placed in my tank as a precaution.

If you've missed the journal to my previous setup you can find it here;
http://www.perthcichlid.com.au/forum/index...showtopic=39613

Ok from this:

To this:

The system is doing well considering no Co2 and Ferts for three months (from Jan to April).

I will confirm the number of Ts. i'll be getting tomorrow once i picked them up, they are Ts. Katoto from a local breeder.

My old Ilangi boss:

And the Moliro boss:

Thanks for reading.

1st Proper Display Tank

Hi All,

I am looking for some advice. I am now in the market for my first real large display tank I will be looking for something at least 5ft if not bigger.

Really looking for suggestion, I notice that are lots of different types and brands. The decisions I have made so far is that I want a tank and cabinet rather than one on a stand, I think it will look nicer to have everything behind closed doors.

My total budget at the moment is about $1500 for the tank and cabinet.

Is there much difference between the different types of brands? or are the mostly the same?
Is it worth buying new or better to get a good seconds hand one?
Currently I have a 3ft tank with a Eheim 2215 will this be powerful enough or should I look at a new filter as well?
Am I better off going with a sump? never used these before so I don't really know the benefits

This will be for a Tropical community, would that make a difference to what I go for.

I have the cash now but do not want to rush out and buy something this weekend before understanding exactly what would be best.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated if you need more details to be able to help then please let me know or if you have seen a useful post where I might find the info then also please let me know.

I have done a bit of searching but having trouble finding all the right info.

Cheers

Duncan

Sponge Filter Performance Mod

Modified my sponge filters and thought I'd share, the blooping noise echoing throughout the entire house made me think "there must be a better way" but sponge filters are awesome so I got to thinking.

This mod will completely rid a spongy of it's tell tale blooping noise and will most likely increase flow, the added air lift tube should definitely do this while also increasing surface agitation and flow around the tank.

With the larger two tier filters only modify the lower chamber.

Any input from you guys is always appreciated

Anyway here goes,

I also have one with a small foam type air diffuser with an airline joiner plugged into it which seems to work even better as it takes less energy to pass air through it than the air stone (found it at Vebas in there blue trays with the air line fittings)
Didn't want to disturb my Fronties to take a pic though but you get the point.

Cheers,

Trent.

Auto Top Up

Being fairly new to sumps I am surprised how much the water level drops in a week or 2. So I have started looking into auto top up units, I know they are relatively easy to make but my time at home is limited as is and they look like they don't cost the earth either, so thinking store bought and hopefully with that I get a very reliable product.

My set-up is a 5x2x2 with a roughly 4x18"x18" sump currently FW but SW could be on the cards. This doesn't leave me with all that much room in the cabinet so ideally I would like one that comes with a submersible pump that I can drop into a Jerry can or similar. Or should I go with the KISS theory and just have a manual float valve ? Not sure what would give me more reliability and reduce the risk of a small flood

Just wanted to know if anyone else has some opinions on good ones bad ones ect

Cheers
