A 1 word reply could hardly imply otherwise. But as B2, I humbly apologise. Just to make you feel better with your namecalling.

Kieran
I always sleep well, I am not going for a ministerial exemption. I purchased my pets legally, it is a violation of my rights to make me kill them.

I have enjoyed 40 years of unrestricted fish keeping, not one of my fish has caused damage to the environment. I am against any form of permit/licence. If we sit back and let Government departments run our hobby in a few years you will only have fish that are on the allowable import list. Only allowable imports will be allowed to cross state borders, so if you move from Perth to Melbourne you won't be allowed to take your Bristlenose or electric yellow. Your LFS won't be able to order that L number that you have always wanted and if you breed your Dimidiochromis compressiceps you will have to register each fry or you wont be able to sell it and you can only sell it to a licenced dealer.

I understand, and I don't envy your situation. It really could have happened to anybody, and I am sorry that this has happened to you.

I have yet to comment here on my opinion But have sent a couple of emails to mp's and the like.

It is a disgrace the way the law makers have gone about this. As we all know there has been no consultation with the hobbyist or LFS. This was made clear when an employee of Morley Aquariums posted a notice about the availability of Oreochromis Tanganicae at their store. Only a few days before the official announcement was made. I am not going to go onto repeat every thing that has already been posted in this thread about what could have and should have happened in the lead up to this announcement. But more speak of how this has effected what I would like to have done some day.

It has always been a dream of mine since I discovered these great fish called cichlids to own and breed a pair of Boulengerochromis Microlepis "The Emperor Cichlid". This dream was not something that could have been achieved easily in my current situation but in time I hoped to have a house that could house an aquarium big enough for this beautiful and majestic species. However this dream sadly will never reach fruition because of the blatantly misguided actions of the OFMIG group.

So I say Thank you for ruining the hopes and ideals of a responsible aquarium hobbyist.

Dear Mr Government.

Why are so many fish on the grey list that have been in this country for decades as part of our hobby and not caused a single problem to the enviroment in all this time now possibly become listed as noxious and banned? while at the same time goldfish and koi which have a very long proven feral track record still be allowed as pets?

Why are you spending our tax dollars to make a big banned tropical fish species list and targeting our hobby when history and science shows our hobby has had a tiny impact on our environment in the scheme of things, while at the same time you allow the farmers and city polution to destroy almost every river and stream on the continent with land clearing, salinity, chemical spraying of herbicides and pesticides, siltation and bank erosion from farm animals, damming and human waste? and the list goes....

Can you please get your priorities in the right order.

Regards
Den

Hi Tony

It's a win for the fish but not for the hobbyist. My opinion on permits or call it a register if you like is in my post above.( July 22 11.17pm)

On July the 6th we were informed about a new law which made some of our fish noxious. On July the 11th I started to kill my pets to comply with the law. On July the 23rd the day that I can no longer sell them I'm told I can keep them. Did somebody make a mistake?

Some people who read this will say you can't please some people.
This hobby gives me a lot of pleasure and the satisfaction of breeding a species that is rare or difficult is what gives me the most enjoyment. It is difficult to keep 2 Oreochromis in the same tank so breeding them was a challenge, now I can get a permit to keep the 40 fish that I have left. As the fry grow they will need their own tank this will take up 2/5 of my fishroom. I usually sell my fry to pay for the costs associated with running a fishroom the size of mine.
Fisheries should not be able to change the rules without any thought as to how they will effect people who were operating within the law.

Cheers Terry

from the above linked article:

“We are taking an educative approach as part of the roll-out of the national strategy for managing ornamental fish,” the department’s principal biosecurity management officer Bill Bardsley said.

How is a blanket ban of certain species with no explanation or evidence to support these bans an educative approach? ....

Litened to the radio today and heard the intro plus other sections of the show but heard no talk back comments about the fish. was in and out due to work so may have missed any other comments. Anyone else hear anything?

Tony

Here's the radio stint (attached) on the topic. I wasn't able to listen long enough to see if there were any callers.

A reminder that's tomorrow's meeting is on the OFMIG Process which is related to this thread. It's important that we all understand how the noxious list additions are being determined etc.

It's is also the Annual General Meeting where the new committee comes on board so a decent turn out is a must! smile.gif
