#366456 Protomelas Sp Hertae And Callochromis Macrops

Posted by extend on 18 August 2018 - 04:39 PM

Okay so here are some more photos of the fish all grown up and looking good.  They have spawned a few times but either the females swallowed the eggs or I was not quick enough to save the fry.  I will keep trying.  Oh and another shot of the Callochromis.

Quick phone pic update of the dominant/most colourful male Protomelas sp hertae.  Will get the DSLR out when I'm home during the day and not as busy.

Here is a few photos of my Protomelas sp hertae I bought from an aquotix when they did an order from east, just starting to colour as well.  The Callochromis I bought from Robs I'm really not sure how long ago but they have been pumping out the babies.

The feeling I get is that not many of the fish Jeremy investigates would actually ever eat a human e.g. wells catfish, aligator gar, goonch catfish and he sets up the show in that way as well. How ever the obvious sharks and tiger fish would eat a human. I enjoy the show for the landscapes, cultures, fish and the interesting ways they are captured on film.

A female Callochromis macrops emptied her mouthful into the fry tank last night. Got around 11 or 12 fry.

Looking good. A 1 male 3 female ratio is good from my experience, so 2 male 6 female when scaled up and so on. Ventralis take a while to reach a nice colour but its worth it in the end.

That is sad. He left a legacy that will be remembered for a long time, I still have a number of his books. Lets not forget the rainbow fish named after him Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi, a nice fish.

So I went ahead and stripped two holding female Callochromis macrops. Managed a pretty good haul of about 31 fry. Here is hoping I can raise them to maturity.

Great Joel :)

I'm having the same issue with females chewing up eggs after spawning. Getting plenty of spawning activity but only had two instances where fry have been produced. Trying a few things to sort that out but if you come up with a solution I'd be keen to hear what you did

Yes sir, this is the second time around so I hope they will have learned a few skills and what not from the first time.  I think I will try get the females out of the main tank earlier this time just to cut down on being chased by other fish in the tank, especially the male.

I now have two female callochromis macrops holding at the same time.  The last eggs were swallowed so here is hoping they go the full pull.
