#359968 Little Ralphy Says.....

Posted by BengaBoy on 01 March 2017 - 04:06 PM

the trumpster on math

“I have to say a lot of people have been asking this question. No, really. A lot of people come up to me and they ask me. They say, ‘What’s 2+2?’ And I tell them look, we know what 2+2 is. We’ve had almost eight years of the worst kind of math you can imagine. Oh my god, I can’t believe it. Addition and subtraction of the 1s the 2s and the 3s. Its terrible. Its just terrible. Look, if you want to know what 2+2 is, do you want to know what 2+2 is? I’ll tell you.
First of all the number 2, by the way I love the number 2. It’s probably my favorite number, no it is my favorite number. You know what, I mean, you know. So, we have all these numbers and we can add them and subtract them and add them. TIMES them even. Did you know that? We can times them OR divide them, they don’t tell you that, and I’ll tell you, no one is better at the order of operations than me. You wouldn’t believe it. That I can tell you. So, we’re gonna be the best on 2+2, believe me. OK? Alright. Thank you.”

if the fish have been in transport for a while, or sometimes even if not, I will add some Stress Coat.

not sure if it helps the fish, but it makes me feel better :)

#352553 Ph And Hardness Equipment

Posted by BengaBoy on 05 June 2016 - 08:31 AM

I had a pH pen for a few years - it seemed fine. Gave it to a mate when I closed my tanks down.

they were not cheap tho - about $60 from memory.

Not continuous but quick and easy to use, and cheaper than buying test kits.

Having said that I hardly use a pH test these days in my tang tanks - I monitor my gH and kH, if kH is good pH is too.

#352134 Setting Up A Tropheus Tank

Posted by BengaBoy on 18 May 2016 - 08:10 AM

Don’t mix more than one variant from each of these groups:

  • Sp. Black
  • Sp. Red
  • Duboisi
  • Moorii
  • Brichardi
  • Annectens

That is don’t have more than one variant from the Sp. Black group together, or more than one variant from the Sp. Red group together.

Be liberal with your classification, for example even though Ikola is now classified as Sp. Ikola, it was once classified as Sp. Black so I wouldn’t put it with any other Sp. Black.

Having said all that, in my opinion you are better off with species only tanks, especially when it comes to breeding.

#351696 Goby Cichlid Tank - Surge Habitat

Posted by BengaBoy on 01 May 2016 - 01:52 PM

April Summary:

The pair & spare:

Pair of Gobies in the Cube tank given the third hell and occasionally “he” is reluctant to eat so decided to put “him” in with the three Gobies in with the Duboisi. At first it looked it might work out okay but after 36 hours “he” was in the wars again. So put him in with the T. “Moops” on his goby lonesome. Pretty happy now and damaged fins have regrown – but think he is missing his goby mates.

Mid-April, a couple of days after removing the “spare” pretty sure I had a spawn with the pair as one became shy to eat and would only eat small flakes. After 11 days all back to normal with their eating so figure the eggs didn’t get transferred to the male. Either they need practice or the Clown Loaches interfered.

The Trio:

These three are pretty happy and am optimistic I might get a pair there as two are much more tolerant of each other, and while not hanging out together, they share territory a bit.

So, now:

  • Have a pair in the surge habitat cube tank looking promising.
  • Three in with the Duboisi – optimistic of a pair
  • And one in with the Mpulungus – the “spare”

Will be interesting to see if the surge habitat is more successful than a standard tang habitat, so far it appears to be, but one can’t really say it is the habitat making the difference.

#350719 :( New Api Nitrate Test Kit

Posted by BengaBoy on 26 March 2016 - 03:50 PM

well, been to the lfs

my new kit tested nitrates as zero

so dud kit or dud batch?

they were sold out so couldn't test the second option.

how does this happen?

if just one kit giving zero readings was the bottle contaminated prior to filling?

or not sealed properly?

makes you wonder about a kit that does give a result and how accurate that may be.

someone using one of these kits will be waiting along time for their tank to cycle   :Rofl_3f:  :o
