I'm having A LOT of trouble sexing my peppies.. At the moment I have 4 and they all look the same to me. And the annoying thing is that I can't even get any decent photos to post. They all seem to have bristles on the front of their noses. They are all between 5-7 cm.

So I was wondering if anybody had any tips on how to sex them?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

At the moment I have 4. I'm getting 3 more on the weekend and the guy i'm buying them from doesn't know what sex they are either. I don't mind because there has to be at least 1F and 1M in a group of 7 right? But it's always nice to know how many of each you've got.

catch the bristlenose one by one. hold them in your hand. rub your thumb on their "snout".....the males will feel spongey/soft were the bristles will grow, the females will feel hard/firm similar to the rest of the body....can't lose wink.gif

For some reason I hate handling bristlenose... They kinda freak me out.. But I love my pepps.

Dunno what it is, I have no problems touching anything else, cleaning fish, guts, blood, whatever but bristlenose weird me out laugh.gif

Hahah Mr orange

i agree with you im all good wth blood n guts and fish etc etc but i always thought handling bristlenose was a tad awkward.....Till i was out johnnos place and he was teaching me bristlenose 101 and was just like "hold this , hold that, thats a female thats a male touch there touch here" and now feeling bristle nose and sexing them , is just as easy if not easyier then venting in my opinion.

Just gotta watch out for the larger sizes little spike!!!!

them spikes are more like hooks and the sharp part of the hook is facing in towards the b/n so you dont really get spiked at all...
if your scared of it then you'll muck about with it.... and you'll be expecting a spike and not be very confident....
just grab em - you cant hurt them they are amoured plated....
been handling them for years and never got a spike..... even when you try to feel their spikes - they are very blunt.....

sorta like catching marron and crabs... just grab em quick and they dont have time to grab you!!!!

haha its more of a thing in my mind johnnoo

I fish alot, and boy a standing on a flathead or cobble isnt the most nice nicest thing in world........and can cause alot of pain, hence why i just respect fish with spikes....

im sure ill be seeing you again in the next couple weeks to grab soem royal whips! thanks for yesterday as well.
