Ive got a Jewel Rio 240 just waiting to be set up at the moment and was thinking of getting a small colony of tropheus for it.
Just wanted to know what types of Tropheus are going around at the moment in Perth that arent super expensive.

The Tropheus are super happy fish to keep, my biggest trouble now is they try and jump into my hand when I feed them. My favourite tropheus are a melanism which I got in a German import but they only pop as I have a couple of species in the same tank. I think a small colony of a sp. that changes colour as they mature is interesting as you have the adults displaying different intensities depending on heirechy and the youth in there are a diff colour giving some diversity.
Tropheus Duboisi are really nice to keep (as long as you don't mind the poor Feng Shui associated with a tank of black fish ) as they have a different youth to adult. I found my Canary cheeks were nice in the same way that the young and older change.
Most LFS's stock Duboisi from what I've seen. Aquotics had some in last time I was there or search Tropheus on the forum buy/sell page.

I had a colony of 15 duboisi happily in a 2 foot cube and they went well. the 2 foot cube (227L) would of been about the same volume as the jewel as I was running a sump.
I Have 40 in a 4 foot x 2foot x 2foot now but have a good amount of volume as the sump fills the whole stand.
I've found they are sensitive to big water changes so take care on that but being vego they don't seem to put the load on the biological filtration that my other Tangs and Malawi's do.

I saw some nice Moorii at Vebas the other day, thinking of getting a small colony of them for the tank.
What food do you feed your tropheus Chris?

I alternate spirulina flakes and cichlid grazer rings. Their favourite food source by far is the Vitalis cichlid grazer rings. Its when putting them into the tank they rush so much i end up with fish in my hands (different story with the little buggers when I put the net in to catch one thats holding ).
I love watching them feed off the rings however I heard that Vitalis may be stopping making them?? With the tropheus they usually graze on algae, i've been surprised at how hard they smash my fibreglass background, they've taken the paint all off it and I'm now leaving a curtain open to try and grow some algae to give it colour again.
Usually with spirulina flakes they dont get much of a fat tummy however they def get fed well up on the rings, trade off is the rings will leave your water a little cloudy on feeding but I've found that with the other Vitalis foods, trade off for a good quality and soft food perhaps. Because my Tropheus are in one of our businesses now they only get fed 2x per week, I give some flakes at the start of the day when I get in (doesn't mess the water up) and then a ring at the end of the day.
Aqua-Pics Veggie and Spirulina Flake Food is good value (load cheaper than a lot of the other brands but seems quality - I'd put it in a smoothy). Then Vitalis for the rings..... Buy LOADS of the Vitalis rings so hopefully they keep making them.
