Just thought I'd throw a few pics up of my newly acquired tank.  It's got a long way to go still but got fish in tonight after they've been in tubs in living room for past 2.5 days.

Picked it up Sunday morning with plenty of help from Rovik and his old man.  Cheers guys :) After a few phone calls to Rovik throughout the arvo to make sure things were set up correctly I had it two thirds full of water Sunday night with one filter running.

It ran for 24 hours but the water was still very black when I got home this arvo (from the ADA Aquasoil blend) so I drained it all and filled it slowly again which improved it slightly.  When empty it gave me a chance to arrange my driftwood and plants (not that you can see it yet).  I then got the big Eheim Pro 3 2080 (just fits) and UV clarifier running tonight before moving my fish over.

I'll post a few more pics when the water has settled down and I get my new lights as it looks like crap at the moment.

And still need to tidy up that mess of power cables on the right and plumb my drain through the wall :)

Cheers Matty.  It's a 5x2 footprint but 32 inches high.  Odd size I know.  It's a custom built tank by Aquotix to fit into a specific space for Rovik, another forum member. Lucky for me he was selling it for a steal :)

Tank has already cleared up heaps over night.

Ahh nice, is this the one that was in the for sale thread?

If my 4 footer packed it in I was going to be all over that :)

arent you meant to let ADA cycle for 4 weeks due to its high ammonia content, the tank needs to cycle again, you really shouldnt have fish in there yet

I would do twice daily checks of Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate and keep the fish out of there until the cycling is complete and levels are stable where they should be.  Lost a lot of fish due to an ADA ammo spike almost two years back :( ... would've lost them all if not for getting Ammo-lock and Prime from Kleinz at about 1am in the morning!!! :)

Ah crap!!  I didn't know about the extra cylcling needed for the Aquasoil as it was the substrate that came with the tank.

I'm not sure if this makes any difference but it was rinsed before going in and then the water filled, then drained, then filled again before fish went in.  Also my Eheim Pro 3 2080 has gone straight on which is fully cycled. I know it'll need time to catch up with extra ammonia the soil may be producing but I'm not feeding my fish at the moment either.  Hopefully this will be ok???

I'm hoping it won't take too long for it to stabalise.  I'm using Prime as a Water conditioner and will continue to do daily water changes if unstable.  The water tested fine last night.  I'll see what it's like tonight.  Thanks for the heads up Bermont and Jim :)

25GT: Yes it's the one from classifieds

Jules: I'm just keeping my American cichlids in this one.  I'm going to throw a few hardy plants in when I get my lighting and see how they go. Have 3 Bala Sharks, and some rainbows too.

Jeff,

Is the ADA 2nd hand? If sop the ammonia spike will have been when it first was used ( you will be safe )

Good luck with tank

Graeme

Yes the ADA is second hand.  That's good to know thanks Graeme. Still had some ammonia present though:

I did a 50% water change afterwards and all good now.  Still has some clearing up to do:

Once fully clear I'll get some opinions on how to arrange décor.  Cheers everyone.

so jealous :-)

Im not the best aqua scaper (does that word exist?) going round, but I always like the look of placing the big objects directly in the middle of the aquarium to form a 'centrepiece' so to speak.

Then on the far left and right sides I flourish with plants.

might take a quick happy snap of my setup to show you what I mean

Using the rule of thirds and the fibonacci spiral will help you with layouts, also look to make triangles and 'lead' the eye over the scape. I find if I have a clear image in my head, it works well, but if I'm a bit wishy washy, it takes a long time and plenty of fiddling to get it looking all right. Good luck. Great tank!

Next time don't rinse the aquasoil. It will turn to mud and cloud the tank for a long time (as you're experiencing).

When I stir the water right up, I take the end off a coke bottle and stuff it with filter floss and put it on the end of the intake. The suction holds it on and it really picks up a lot of crap overnight.

Interesting selection of tank mates there Jeff.
That is a great set up though. So much potential with a tank with that much height.

What's so interesting?  Pretty stock standard I would have thought?  Is it the fact I have rainbows in with Americans? Just curious :)
