I picked up the Seneye Reef for the light meter and thought to share some pics. Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting a power source for it (on order with third company) and have a desktop, not a laptop. This is because the meter has a USB cable connection so either need a laptop (no cost), a usb power adapter (pretty cheap) or a wifi power adapter (costs as much as the unit itself).

The light meter tests for PAR, lux and Kelvin. The unit also tests for temperature, ammonia and ph. For ammonia and ph you have to buy slides so I spent a bit extra on a few things to try out.

Having nothing better to do I've been trying out the chart functions with the lights next to the desktop computer. The charting seems to freeze sometimes but was fairly quick to setup and getting some results (of something anyways).

You can show the plant light preference (thick, coloured line) and what the human eye can see (dashed, coloured line). The light spectrum reading is the white/grey line. The unit is much cheaper than the apogee MQ200 par meter but for comparing lights and bulb decay hopefully it works ok.

Still no USB power adapter in post (sigh - guess it's character building). Oh well.

Woo hoo! USB power adaptor turned up. Meter is in tank with a test slide nicely sitting half way down the tank.

Hopefully have readings tonight or tomorrow. From memory it takes a reading every hour.

The darn USB connection dropped into the tank water so got that drying off.

:) Sorry for the delays. The wifi is playing up in the house.

So anyways I set up the device in tank about a foot and a half down. Ran the cable behind the canister outlet pipes and thought it looked nifty. Showed the family and they looked mildly interested for a change....

But to read the measurements the device has to come back out of the water. Would have been far more sensible to store in the USB power adapter imo.

I was going to do it today but would have to do a water change to drop the water level to get the cable back out. Will hopefully try this on the weekend.

Sigh..........

I tried hooking it up to a spare router but no luck.

I've emailed Seneye to ask about the wifi power adapter. My concern there (to be honest I've given up on cost) is that there is hardly any mobile coverage under the tin roof. If it will connect to the home wifi I guess it would work but I'm kind of thinking everything else has gone wrong.

All my problems would be solved with a cheap laptop so I'm actually wondering if I can get one second-hand or something. Just thought of that then, will have to look into.

Last shot was top view. Car was in a crash yesterday so not 100% today.

This is front view of tank showing the meter.

Are you ok Craig ... have you been checked out ?????  I would suggest it

And to the above ^^ personally it is way beyond me but I would be calling an IT person to try and sort the WIFI out whether you need a range extender?/booster?

Hi, thanks mate. I confess I would have skipped the hospital but was glad I went (after they finally let me go!). I got x-rays done and they were ok so they gave me some tablets for the whiplash. Just wrong spot at wrong time but nobody injured.

That's a good idea. I'll have to look into that. I'm a bit lost as well. If it's not plug and play, it is a bit complex for me. Excellent thought on IT.

Included the link on PAR plant preference again just for reference.
fresh water plant PAR levels - Seneye

I did pull the meter out today and it uploaded a bunch of readings to the seneye server. Was mostly plug and play but a few tricks. Once loaded there are various graphs which can be adjusted by time and a few other settings. Fairly quick to get something usable.

I'll post the others on LUX and Kelvin later but below is PAR. I measured where the meter sits and it is actually half way down the tank. Assuming all is working ok, I seem to have a low PAR problem.

The graph on the left is my tank readings, the coloured chart on the right is plant preference (I think, I must check that).

The seneye reef meter only comes on when the lights come on so it looks like I'm getting a PAR of 30 to 40 halfway down the tank. Ignore the squiggle at the end of the graph, I think it was recording while connected to the computer.

Just for reference I had a note posted that Tom Barr thought PAR of 40 at substrate level was good for most plants.

Extension cable turned up finally. It's really a telephone cable with a USB adapter either end but does the job.

Quad T5HO readings about a foot below surface.

I looked back and bought the light in September last year so bulbs are not that old. The readings seem to make sense in that I'd expect the reds to do worse. Maybe I need a dual x quad T5HO

===============================================================================

It's interesting some of the light readings.

The hydroponics LED spectrum (grey/white line) matches theoretical plant preference (thick coloured line) the best but to my eye it is very strong in red light and doesn't look natural. I did buy it for the red light to balance out the reef led light when I had these going.

The LED reef blue light spectrum makes sense with what I can see for bulb colour.

Before I swapped to the quad T5HO I was running the hydroponics red light in centre of tank plus a reef light (white light only) on either side.

Looks like the plants were getting 300 PAR roughly!! That would explain why I was above EI dosing for potassium. Along with the weekly trimming and death by BBA.

Now I'm down to a tenth of that.

Not sure on the next step. I could lower the T5HO to sit directly on tank or add a one foot T5HO I have and test that (on right side of tank).

The left side and back of tank are going well. Nothing very flash for plants but they are growing fine.

Lowered the light onto the tank top (about 10cm) and I'm picking up an extra 20% PAR reading. Much less reflected light I assume.

The spread of the light is not as good though unfortunately.

Just a share of a wider shot on the tank with all equipment running (really need to consolidate to one thread).

Thanks! Spent ages getting the co2 bottle to match the pot plant colour. :)

I'd love to have the tank hood back on but just too much work removing each week / lights get too hot.

Still only a little algae with the light now sitting on the tank rim. The underwater lights have a little green algae but pretty much ok.

Hygro and ambulia on left side going almost a little too well.
