Hmm. Is there another larger or more brightly coloured male in the tank? I have had a group of red empress before 2m 2f. I thought at first I had 1m 3f because only 1 was coloured up, then the dominant male died and the other male coloured up.

Hmmm. Either a young male starting to colour up or a very nice female... Sorry I am not an expert. I'm sure someone will confirm what it is...

that is the biggest problem trying to set up a display tank from juvies also at the same time the most fun watching and seeing them colour up into males

Chuck it to me if it's a female and I'll add it to the colony :)

Might be a female with lots of colour food. How big is it and what is it eating?

You can see a bit of orange in the body, if the bottom find get even a bit of black then it's a less dominant male! Simple really but how big is he?
Sorry didn't read wait a little bit it's still small I'm 70+% sure it's a male patience is key!

From my experience, the flush of orange that begins to show behind the gills is beginnings of a male.
After that stage, some tiny tiny little dots will appear to the rear of the dorsal fin, just before the anal and dorsal begin to form a little point.

AT that size if it is colouring, I'd guess male. Looked bigger in pic.

Yep that's what I was saying I'm quite sure it's a male, keep us updated on him! Remember they do get quite big!
