Got home today to find my small umbees hovering near an ornament and all other fish up in a corner of the 1400L.
Upon closer inspection I discovered that the umbees had spawned and there was eggs on the top of an ornament!!!
I could not believe it!!!, So chuffed!!
The female is 13cm & the male 9.5cm, so they are tiny as, certainly wasn't trying to spawn them.......

Now I have removed the 20cm pleco who was getting chomped by the umbees a lot and just left the pair in with the other fish for the moment.

I'll get some photos up soon, had to use a flash so colours are not right but you will be able to see the eggs etc.

Anyone know if I should be removing the eggs to a fry saver or leaving the eggs in the community tank?
Keen to hear peoples thoughts.

J

My male, looks shiny as in person!

Thanks.
Checked this morning and eggs are still there biggrin.gif

Will the pair bond be broken if I take out the ornament?
Maybe they will they beat each other after it's removed?
Have you removed eggs previously with central americans, and if so, what happened?

Well, I'm off to work so I hope all is ok with the pair today.....

PS. Hey Az that male is the one that was beating the other one of the last 2 of 3cm fry that I grabbed at Midland a couple months back.

I wasn't sure he was keeping fish anymore, thought his gear was all for sale a while back??

Well the eggs are still there so that's encouraging...just have to see how it goes.

My current school of thought is to leave the pair alone and hopefully, without too much disturbance, remove more of the other occupants.

Well on the weekend I hope to post some good pictures instead of the dodgy ones above!!

Keep you all posted,

J

hey man congrats on the spawn. finally an umbee breeder in perth!! that male looks killa for his size

i've still got a couple of umbees growing out. not 100% sure on sexes yet but i think my biggest around 12cm is a male. my big male got sick a while back and ended up dying. seriously sucks!

keep us posted man. will be interesting to see how long a breeding pair of umbees can co-exist with other fish in the tank

Thanks Cuban, good to hear you are still in the hobby.
So you may have another male, I've got a 20cm(approx) Female that needs a mate.....let me know if you are interested in attempting a pairing.

Friday night I removed the ornament the eggs were laid on as I caught the female eating all the eggs and chasing the little male off.

I checked the floating fry saver that I have the ornament and this morning I have wrigglers!!

Wicked as!

Will pop up a pic soon.

My little pair of umbees are gonna be ok in that tank for a while as everyone else is much bigger than them, guess Ill have to move on some fish soon though.

The female is my fish nicknamed 'killa'.
She was so nasty I thought it must be a male!
I would recommend you keep them in same tank but divided till you see any courting behaviour.... otherwise she will mince your male...

So do you have room or do you want to pop your male in and watch?

goodjob.gif Fingers crossed for a big batch!

Well have a batch of wrigglers but don't know how many, the female is really on guard duty and keeps her body between me and them.
So all going well so far.
Wrigglers are in the cave.

I had a really bad start to the day, went out to look at tank and there was my umbee pair taking their free swimming fry out!
UNFORTUNATELY, then the fry went towards my 90cm airstone, got caught in the current and then were raised into my filter return current.
This blew them all over the tank and I watched in horror as my other fish (6 of them who are now all sold) gobbled them down.

Sad

Sad

Thought the umbees aggressive attitude would have discouraged the other fish from going near them.....

Oh well now I only have the pair and one texas in there, one fish should be able to be watched, I hope.

Until next time..

Hey man haven't been around here in a while but saw your post and thought I'd say congrats. Don't worry too much I'm sure they will spawn again.
