Hi All,

I normally use the most basic of equipment on my tanks and I think its worked pretty well. But I have been looking at some "flash" internal power filters and was wondering if anyone used them and if there is any significant benefit to using a $160 filter as opposed to a $20 filter.

The major problem with small internal filters is their relatively small capacity for media.  I don’t have any personal experience with the Tunze product you link to (although the brand has a very strong reputation), but generally this style of filter provides great water flow and good mechanical filtration, but relatively poor biological filtration.
 

The “science” behind the Hydra filters is “interesting”.  Even the data provided by the company in support of their product is  . . . . . odd.  Certainly worth spending a bit of time in research via a Google before forking out $100+ on one.

Yes I've seen those tunze internals personally I like canisters or sumps for the extra media Capacity however the tunze internal looks like a great addition to compliment your canister.

I would def look into getting one instead of getting a wave maker on its own as for the same price you get the added benefit of a extra filtration as well as flow

I agree, I dont use internal filters other than sponges due to the lack of biological filtration capacity. But some of these better filters sound like they might make life better for the fish... dunno.
Also agree that the info provided by hydra is a bit average.
Anyone using flash filters and have an opinion on them?
