That is an incredible amount of detail for $1500 fish... Who do these adds, why do they spend no time on them????

Makes me laugh/cry/mad (depending on mood) when I think of all the people who get pissed about keeping tb's in aquariums but its okay to keep a 5cm + fins fish in tanks like that.
Call me old fashioned, but I reckon its nothing short of cruelty.

I totally agree MM, the problem starts at the LFS though. They display them like that so the buyer believes they are ok to do the same.
I'm sure Saj can tell you all about how fighters prefer larger tanks.

At the shops they keep them in small containers cause it is fine for them for the little time they are in the shops, but buyers think that's fine to keep them like that the whole of their life. My giant betta lives in a 20l tank with heater, filter and gets biweekly waterchanges with RO water to keep the water soft like betta's like it (but RO water is not nessecary) and I sometimes put half an Indian almond leaf in their for him, I can't even imagine someone keeping him in a cup!!!!

Michael,

I Dont think its fine to be kept in small containers just because they can be kept alive that way. Just because a person or a business wants to make a few bucks from an animal doesnt mean the animal shouldnt have a decent quality of life. As I said its cruelty and for what? Simple, for the sake of economics.
Geeze my little gobies have a 65ltr tank some say you can keep a pair in 20ltrs... you know who says that kind of thing? A*#eholes!

Yeah, yeah, I know, its time to take my happy pills.

At LFS they only stay in cups for a very short time, and like the betta's at Morley, they get daily 100% w/c. I don't like city farmers way of keeping them, as disease spreads through all their tiny containers as they are all part of a connected system, and they're betta's always look very unhealthy, unhappy and sick/dying.

Michael,

So ok they get cramped up for a week in store which is crap for the poor ol fish and then...

I totally agree MM, the problem starts at the LFS though. They display them like that so the buyer believes they are ok to do the same.

True, it should be a rule that LFS can't sell betta bowls and glass vase like things, and they should be offering 20l tanks with the lot. The only problem with them doing this is they will probably hardly sell any, as people just want to put them in a vase or bowl as it's cheap, then when you tell them that they need a 20l with a bunch of other stuff it goes from $10 for a bowl to $30-$40 for a tank setup. Also people wouldn't want to spend $30-$40 on a tank just for a Betta, so they should have a sheet in front of the bettas that shows other fish that can be kept with them, as most people are unaware that betas can coexist fine with many types of fish. Anyone else got any ideas? I would love for betas kept in vases and bowls to be put to an end, at least WA!!!

I don't accept the conditions bettas are kept in at fish stores - they should be in at least a litre or two each so they can swim. Need to be sold into a minimum 20 litre tank! I hate those cups - even if they change the water daily, they can't swim and the temperature is not kept at the appropriate level. *angry face*

A LFS can do what they want to, as it's their shop. In saying that, I got my daughter a blue Betta last week, and out it in a 2 foot tank of it's own, and it looks a lot happier now. It is sad seeing the bettas in the little box.
