Heya

There is a limestone quarry in Kwinana, on Abercrombe Road off of Thomas Road.

This where I have gotten my limestone in the past. Regarding holes, I have not ever found a decent peice with exactly the holes I wanted, so I used a dremel or a drill to etch out the shape, then blasted the limestone with high pressure water, to remove any oils etc.

Then, I soaked the peice of rock for about 3 months, replacing the water at the least, weekly.

The good thing about the rock in Kwinana is the presence of Gyp or cap rock, which is very hard, and does not dissolve. This greatly improves the quality of the rock in my opinion.

Regards
BT

i've found some decent sized limestone rocks by just going to fish shops NOR.

They cost a fair bit though... avg price of $3.30 a kilo... the big ones in that tank are around 10kg each. I know Aquotix has a lot of limestone rocks.. i saw a few down there with holes in it similar to the ones i've got in my tank

Those hole look like blasting holes, where they drill down, then drop a charge and blow the rock into managable chunks. Theres also the same diameter (well, i think so) holes at city beach and floreat groyne. Least i'm pretty sure it was for blasting.

If you go to a landscaping or limestone place they should have heaps of broken pieces which should be very cheap (they basically wouldnt sell them much for landscaping as most ppl want rectangular blocks). They dont have any holes but a drill with a masonary bit will fix that. If its less dense limestone even a blunt drill bit will cut though it damn easily. When its harder, its still much easier than say brick, but your best off with a sharper drill bit. Its also easier to drill dry as the dust just pours out and doesnt restrict the drill or get stuck in it.

A chisel can also be useful, but be careful or you'll split the limestone.

Lastly, theres some good limestone at fish shops, but they tend to have a premium on them.

Hlokk i also believe some of the holes in limestone are from tree roots.

Where i get my rocks from i actualyl have to break them off with a huge metal railway picket and the holes are perfectly hollow with lots of lil holes around it.

The holes are not from blasting...they naturally occur through erosion and from the rotting of tree roots as Blake has indicated. I have about 200 kg of tubes and half tubes for sale if anyone is interested.

Hi Blake,
It is $2.00 per kg...which is reasonable considering the amount of work involved in carting it.
