To ensure the optimum filtration without adjusting for stocking levels (will explain later), one entire water volume every hour. If you use a timer flood and drain, than you need to move one entire water volume through your growbed (filtration) within that 15mins flooding (normal mechanical timer 15 mins interval)... hence your water pump need to be sized about 4 times more...

In regards to the comment about adjusting for stocking levels, some people tend to filter their water less or more based on stocking levels, but I prefer to stick to the optimum filtration hence ensuring it is not a cause of any problems.

Barra, it is a bit late in the season for barra fingerlings...

Do read up about growbed volume to fish stocking levels... it is especially important for newbies and new systems...

For a new system, you tend to go with half the recommended stocking levels...

Thanks for the reply, I'm asking for a work mate, whos keen to get into it. I guess a pump is all that's needed as the filtration is done via the grow bed.

Yes you will need the water pump as well as a backup air pump. Stocking levels in AP are usually slightly higher than ponds, hence aeration is crucial especially during hot months. If he wants to find out more, send him to Backyard Aquaponics in Jandakot. Great people and they are happy to give advice for free (within reason)...
