G'day

Heads up everyone. Weather is warming up, and with it comes our reptiles becoming more active again. Already had a few calls for snakes. Got this guy this afternoon, grumpy bugger.

I am finding some bobtails around the place, pretty cool little guys, hardly ever try to bite me if I try to get them off the road or pathway. Also saw a king brown swimming in Herdsman lake.

This bobtail was found in the female toilets in an industrial area of Kewdale! People think that if they are in an urban area their will be no reptiles, this is not always true.

Before anyone asks, someone called me and let me know it was in the toilet, I didn't personally find it! ;)

King brown's geographical range doesn't extend south to Perth. Being Herdsman lake and swimming I would have my money on a Tiger Snake. Their colours are highly variable. Can be a nice pretty snake with vibrant yellow bands to completely black/brown with a complete lack of markings. Could have been a dugite, but being Herdsman lake I'd go a tiger.

Here are a couple of my photos to show the difference.

Tiger snake (quite a nice one)

King brown/Mulga snake - actually a member of the black snake family.

Alex, I know a guy compiling a list of reptile relocators, would you mind PM'ing me your details so I can get it added to that list?

I'm hoping to do a venomous snake handling course soon'ish.

Sure, I will PM through my details now.

I had to do a  formal course, even though I was competent before I could apply for my Reg 17 relocation license. I did mine through the Armadale reptile centre. Klaus is a great bloke, and has probably forgotten more about reptiles than I know. The money obviously helps support and keep the centre open also, which is a bonus as it is a fantastic place. I can't remember the exact cost as my employer paid for it for me, it was reasonable though.

No worries man.

Herdsman lake is a great spot. Heaps of tigers there always amazes me when I see people with dogs off the leash and the dogs crashing through the bull rushes into the water. Recipe for a bite. Not to mention it disturbs the bird life.

Yeah, I was just eating my lunch there one day, at first I thought it was a stick floating down but then I realised it was a snake, went after a little duck, didn't see if it caught it though.

One time when I was flicking through the channels on TV I came across a show called Deadly 60 and he saw like 10 snakes around Hersman lake. Apparently the lake has the highest concentration of tiger snakes in Australia!

Sounds realistic. Carnac Island would be right up there, I'd love the chance to get on there and have a look at the local tiger population. Most are blind from feeding on chicks of nesting birds having their eyes pecked at the by adults. Still function fine with no sight! Not many wild animals could survive without sight!

Apparently they used to/may still release the tiger snakes that people remove/catch into hersman?

Conditions of license state that- all fauna must be released in the wild within their natural range and away from built up areas or human habitation.

So it is open to interpretation, I wouldn't personally relocate anything into Herdsman Lake, far too likely to come into contact with people/pets.
