Failsafe only works in case you can't control it anymore - doesn't work if you have power loss or a motor stops working, then it just drops.
There are some cool automatic parachutes you can get that allow it to come down gently and not smash into a thousand pieces (or someone's head). But they are quite costly still.

I saw a guy locally not long ago with a nice setup, few grand worth of gear. But his groundstation went kaputt and he had to fly by sight (which technically you should do anyway).
Would be nice to check out the walkera and what extra functions it has

I had an 8x3x3 moved from the shop into my single storey house. Bonds Removals did the job with a scissor lift and 6 people and professional suction devices.
Up or down stairs I wouldn't even dream of doing by myself - imagine the mess if the tank drops and a nice piece of glass injures or kills someone.
Moving glass like this is no joke. Get real pros to do it. They are insured and have done it before.

The brand is only half the story, the other half is how they are maintained. It seems to me a lot of people think that they buy a canister and plug it in and it will work for the next 100 years perfectly without requiring maintenance. And by maintenance I don't mean cleaning it out. I mean checking and lubricating the o-rings, hoses and connections.
I would like to know how exactly those Eheims "crapped themselves". How old they were. When was the last time the o-rings were checked. Because if the motor fails, the filter will not leak. It will only leak if there is a crack in the wall or an o-ring is compromised.
Eheim also has just a little more market share than any other brand I imagine, so more people have them and since people don't tend to maintain them properly, you will hear more stories about them.
In the end, it doesn't matter what the brand is that much - if you maintain a canister properly, it will last. The build quality and material used may differ though, so el-cheapo nasties plastic may crack more easily when you swap hoses for example.

I use one of these:
connected to 18mm hoses. one end connects to the plumbed outlet of my tank to start the syphon, once water flows the pump kicks in.
When it's done I shut a valve in the hose, move it to the next tank, open the valve and the pump starts again.
My 1500L tank takes about 15 min to drain 50% and I don't have to do anything except watch. No lugging buckets around.
And all the water goes onto my lawn.

There's a large asian grocery store and an asian kitchen supply store next to Aquotix. Chances are they may have something like it. Staff at both speak English well (not always the case from experience) so you could call up before making the trip.
