A bit of a rarity in the Oz market. They look interesting. There's some big discussions over on the MASA forums here - http://www.masa.asn....ic.php?t=199937

And some patent legalities here -

Been noticing a few LED tubes floating around the electrical wholesalers. I had a good look at them and at the moment I can't justify the price to change. Maybe in the near future the price will come down but it's still kinda new technology so I guess that reflects the price. Not really sure what the light would look like through water though. Could be interesting. I'd stick to the tried and true until the price comes down.

there are some people in the us using leds, but they are growing coral, if your just using them for showing off fish they shouldn't be too bad at all, and one posative thing i have found out is that they have a 50 000 hr life before dropping to 70% of total output

Hi all,

After weeks of research, circuit diagrams and tracking down various diffusing film and reflective film I have my bought my power supply and have ordered my constant current, dimmable drivers and my power leds.

Still waiting but only a few weeks off my 8ftr to be available for installation, then I'll be onto these led lights.
At 60 watts I will have over 5000 lumens entering the tanks from 12 point sources (can run at max of 120watts & .
All sounds good in theory.....Let you all know how I go

OK here is the hardware below to produce 5160 minimum lumens at half max current(60w) and 9009 lumens at max current 11.2A (120w).

Sounds like an awesome project, depending how it goes I may try to pass it off as a project at work to get the gear and actually make it at work lol.

Gotta love the smell of melting solder, even though its not good for ya lol.

What power supply are you using to drive the LED's?

I think I can make out a Jaycar powersupply, which i assume is a 5v unit, but then you have 4 power modules which I assume that you will be using to drive 3 LED's each.

I have a similar project on the go, and have ordered the LED's but am still trying to work out the best way to drive them

Thanks

Howdy

That is a 240vAC to 12vDC 12.5amp (150W) power supply that needs to be installed by an electrician.

What leds have you ordered and which config (4P or 4S or 2S2P or are they singles??) are they in?

So do you know your required input voltage and current?

Which driver are you planning to use?

interesting stuff.

OK here is a pic of the aluminium profile that has been powdercoated and cut to size.
Have yet to clean up the 45degree edges and drill and bolt together.
Once that is done I will begin soldering all the components together, then glue them into the channel.
I have a set of 26mm optics to go on lastly too.

Drilled switch recesses and bolted together the aluminium today.
Soldered my first bank of leds and driver together today and calibrated the output voltage of the power supply.
Got a heap of soldering to do on Sunday.
Making progress though biggrin.gif

Ok fired it up again.
there are no lenses in the holders yet so very diffuse at the moment.
If you turn off all other lights in the kitchen and living area it is like daylight!!
Seems to produce a crapload of light.
I can not wait to have this installed above my new tank !!!!!

Please be aware LED systems are very time consuming to construct and you must get your circuit and driver combo right.

Expensive but no buying globes for me for 100,000hours now!!!
