Or you could go for a Rena xp4 and fluval xf5 and for less than the eheiam.
Then if one brakes you have a back up and more media Capacity.

And if cannister filters are so good, why dont lfs use them on all their tanks? I have seen more sump setups in shops.

We use them on our display tanks... and we use them ourselves at home.... our systems that hold over 4000L each, have sump filters because there is nothing else commercial out there that can do the job.... and these filters get work done to them daily due to the bioload.
I know of people that have used coarse filter material in their cannister (similar to the materials used in many sump filters) and they never do maintenance to their filters either..... if you dont catch dirt, you dont have to clean it - they use internal power filters to clean the tank - they are easier to clean, and the cannister works as the biological filter that never gets touched.
Cannister filters run on lower wattages (pump wattage), so a long term saving in power consumption.... and they are quieter and less messy (and less heat loss, evaporation, less mould/odour build-up in the cabinet) - but these factors depend on the design of the sump filter.

Fair call, I dont use cabinets, so dont have that issue.
However I have compared my sump to some larger cannisters and found them to have a similar or more noise to mine.

Werdna is spot on.Your also better off keeping things separate. If your heater goes your filters out of action.

If the heater goes, the filter continues to work.... and the whole head is replaced with a new unit on the spot when you get a chance to bring it back to the LFS.... which is very rare for the Pro 3 units... we have replaced more Jaeger heaters by percentage than Pro3 thermos.
As an alternative, you can use the Hydor in-line heaters as mentioned earlier above.

Have decided to go with the 2080 instead and run in-line 300W Hydors.

Hi all.In my opinion i reckon there the bees knees. As a salesman in the shop or doing maintenance jobs on the side, they are economical, hardly need cleaning(depending on stock density)and are easy to clean as well.Yeah they can cost a packet but do the math on running costs filter media costs over the long run you come out better of.

The differences of the running cost would be so small and not worth worrying about. As for cleaning, I personally don't find my rena or fluval harder to clean.
The one time I have cleaned them that is they have been running for a year in a heavily stocked tank with no problems (22 fronts fed three to 4 times a day), the water is crystal clear. Filter media: I am not sure what your on about as you can put whatever media you want in. It doesn't matter what brand the canister is.
I have eheim media in my fluval from when the eheim crapped it's self.
Anyways the question the post asked was "Is the Eheim worth the asking price?". The answer is no.
Are they good filters, I would have to say yes. I had a few off them and had a problem with one.
You can get a xp4 and a Fluval xf5 and two 300 watt heaters for less than the Eheim $889. Are they worth the money..????
If you have to get an Eheim for the sake off having one go nuts.

Got my 2180 off Krystal, had nearly 12 months of trouble free running so far.
I keep 2 jaeger 300w as backup just in case the heater stops....yes it is the most reported fault of that model on the net.
I got it because it is convenient for my setup as has loads of media capacity and no heaters in the tank
