Bloody inconvenient isn't it! Its hard to wean a single fish onto pellets. They seem to be more adaptable with the competition of tank mates.

I'm thinking about Gambusia for a while for convenience and growth but that will just make it harder to get it back on to pellets in the long run.

Personally I wouldnt be happy with the disease/parasite risk of doing that. Shouldnt be too difficult to wean them onto pellets using chopped up prawn or fish chunks. Just takes time.

Just the time it can take for these pesky cod on their own... You're right though, it's worth taking the time to do it.
