saw this whilst looking on the pleco planet forums and figured i would share, no denying what it is , thought it was pretty cool

well that would be a matter of opinion, the individual who actually uploaded the photo said the fish was quite ill when they first got it, probably evident in the first picture but has been trying to nurse it back to good health. how have they turned it into an "abomination"?

i have a peppermint with 3-4 small extensions on the end of his tail, hoping he has the genes

Zacy - I think it's do with it maybe being a Hybrid. But I am not experienced with BN types

it looks like it had some finrot, you can see the regenerated areas on its dorsal fin.(semi transparent patches.) unfortunately longfin varieties are prone to it. The fins are also pretty messed up.

had this conversation with a few people...  that have seen the fish in the flesh... and although they didnt want to tell the owner it is a common longfin that is what they believe it is... just a very dark one with lighter spots/markings.... 

 

the guy that sold it to the current lady owner reckoned its 5 generations of line breeding.... cough cough.... there is only one fish and that is it... when line breeding you get fish with inbetween length fins through the development stage... 

 

my only deduction is it is a common longfin...... or..... someone has used hormones and induced a cross breed from pep and common longfin and its prob infertile as he couldnt breed from her and he decided to make as much money as he could from it before it died... 

 

a one off fish that appears to be what it is said to be....

When I saw the second and third photos I also thought perhaps it wasn't a pep, something just didn't look right. But that first picture the black and white is really defined and you wouldn't think it to be anything but a peppermint? Funny you should mention the money aspect of the whole thing because it didn't take long in the post for people to start making offers for fry and breeding.

The first I saw of this fish was when she was trying to sell it due to ill health (owners, not the fish) but instead kept it.
However due to the plan of selling it she kept it in a shared tank and during all the ruckus it actually crossbred with a L144, below are pictures of the offspring that she posted on facebook today.

hmmm just checked her facebook page and didnt see any fry... or on any of the facebook pleco groups....

 

the fry look to be common b/n... it isnt possible for a peppermint to breed with an L144 which is simply a leucistic albino b/n as there is only one genuine L144 known to exist... all other fish that have been given the tag of L144 are not the real deal... so back to the orignal argument - common longfin b/n can breed with the L144 bristlenose we have in oz... so really all it confirms is its not a longfin peppermint...

She's trying to sell it again, latest pics don't make it look that pretty (looks alot more like a common now). Apparently it was bought from previous owner for $1100
