I seem to be having a problem with my bolbitis fern which is developing these brown patches on the fronds, they are gradually getting larger.

Has anyone come across this before. It is not on the new growth, but the old growth is not the worst affected either. My leaning is towards a nutritional deft.
Any thoughts would be welcome.

Cheers
Brett

Hi Brett,
What brand fertilizer do you use? If it is in tablet form, have you overdosed and burnt the roots? I have seen this sort of foliage deterioration before, and thought root burn to be the culprit.

I agree with merjo IF its not algae that is... Check your dosage, is it the first time you are dosing this amt or has it been the same all along, till this happened? From what i know bolbitis prefers some light current in the tank to thrive.

This is a pretty dodgy photo when I look at it!

No it is not algea, the actual frond develops these brown patches. On some of the fronds where it is more severe the frond has actually rotted away.

This bolbitis does not have any roots in the substrate, I have not added any fertiliser to the water for months. This is why I suspect deficiency but it might be a disease. This piece of bolbitis originally came from Vince, it was all green at that time and has grown a lot of new fronds since.

Still wondering
Brett

Hey Brett, I suspect a deficiency as well. I notice the leaves are quite a light green and a little less translucent compared to the ones i have that are growing well. I have had this same thing happen to me in less than ideal conditions (in a tang /malawi tank)..

Its a tough plant but it really loves some CO2 and a decent nutrient supply as IMO when doing well it can grow faster than java fern or anubias.

I would probably test your water for nitrogen, maybe add a little potassium, but suspect traces/iron to be your most likely culprit so would try dosing a small amount of that too...
