is there any flow through the gravel at all having that much?
wouldnt you just end up with a heap of gravel + an air stone essentially?

the hollow space below the gravel makes water circulate a fair bit more efficiently then just having an airstone. The constant movement of the air up the column creates something of a vacuum in the space below the gravel which sucks waste downward. With an air stone you get a more localised turbulent flow which is readily dispersed. Good for aerating the water but does not lead to a comparable circulation of water.

i understand how an UGF works, what i mean is. with so much gravel + detritus flow would be minimal at best?

It is a bit of a catch 22 but there would still be a reasonable amount of flow given it's such course gravel but yeah, it would be somewhat reduced. In anycase, it's obviously working....I plan to copy shortly

you'd be surprised how much flow you do really get.... one does run a decent air pump... not your 15 buckers with one or two outlets....
there is a couple downsides if you get blanket weed growing in your tank/gravel..... but if you can see it starting you can get on top of it straight away... and b/n help eat it too - just stir up the gravel by hand.... and once every 3-4 months its a good idea to change your airstone... or regularly clean them... thats only essential if your running high volumes of fish and feedings are high...

only downside of gravel is if you get cone snails (mts) in the gravel you have 2 choices if you wanna get rid of them....
remove gravel and boil it - to kill snails
or toss it out and start afresh.....
i just toss it out and start clean..... recycle the tank and then start again.....
