are you using fresh water for your topups? if not may explain the high salinity, try and keep it round 1.025

yeh using fresh, thats the least of me probs i think, last night my tank hit 30 degrees I hope its a faulty thermometer, unlikely

so Im gonna have to fix this prob before I even think bout putting fish in, surprised my glass shrimp havnt turned orange

my coralimorph dont look too good.

personally, don't use a floating hydrometer, very average and cant be calibrated, best bet is to buy a proper refractometer, I had one and compare it to my floating hydrometer, and the hydrometer was out by 0.003, not much but could be enough to make things start to turn down hill.

as for collecting salwater from the shore, not the best idea.

I am told a lot of the shore line water is more polluted then water collected further out.

the readily available salt water that some shops sell is maintained and collected from the fremantle ocean farmers. they actually pump the water from quite far out and farm it in there facility then supply to the stores. well they use too anyway.

this water is more then sufficient for your marine set up.

My nano has been sitting at 31degrees since I got it started that why I haven't put any fish or large corals in yet. The heater hasn't even been plugged in yet either, I think the little pump might be the cause of the heat.

I noticed that the Nano tank at vebas sits at 27.8 degrees and the Clowns look pretty happy, same with the corals so i am waiting till the temp drops before I put in $50 - $100 fish / shrimp.

When I had marine tanks i used RO but in the end I thought it was probably a waste of time.

Just took time to get the water volume pushed through and was just an added expense. I dunno, I just gave up on it and treated make up water and that was that.

If I was to go back to marine I wouldn't use RO unless making up my own salt water, but that's got knobs on it!

I kept marine for a while about 10 years ago and collected sea water from the beach. I never had an issue from it.

Except, of course, middle of winter walking waist deep into ocean water with 2x25L containers can be rather cold. And then carrying them back over the sand dunes SUCKED!

And then you have to dispose of it somewhere, its not like you can throw your old water on the garden.

Pfft, marine sucks! :P

Hi Guys

there are companies that come and deliver NSW to your aquarium or drums and fairy cheap!.

the amount of time and effort to collect (depending on size of tank, not worth it)

as for temp, 30-31 way to high, tank will go into meltdown and not so much fish but corals will die, depending on size of tank, might start looking at a chiller.

i kept my tank between 26-28

regarding top up, i noticed a huge difference when using ro, but at the end, my filter worked just as good.

i have a friend that collects his own from freo mole, but he takes 2+ hours to get 200L

Cheers

Jason

p.s if your tank is hot and dont want to loose coral, use a couple of ice blocks or forzen bag of peas to cool down :) for a one off
