The filter sponge doesn't need replacing unless its damaged and leave the carbon pad out. Only use the media and sponges. And filter wool and going on your stocking level every 6 months is plenty.

Bowdy, why would you leave the carbon pad out? I have my carbon pad in the top of my filter, and just replace one when I remember. Usually a month or two.

Carbon pad is a waste of time unless trying to remove a toxin from the water. The life of a carbon pad is very short and need replacing far to much. Keep the water quality high and you shouldn't need it.

Ok fair enough. Might keep my spare carbon pads for if I need to take meds out of the water in the future. They're a piece of cake to add or remove in the pro 2 canisters. Probably a bit more involved process removing from the classics.

Be sure to put the media in the correct order. Noodles bottom then sponge then the little balls. Media bags make life a lot easier for maintenance also.

Didn't the canister come with media ??

To join the two together you use a small piece of eheim hose. Should say this on the instructions. I wouldn't bother with the spray bar personally.

There are a number of vids on youtube on setting up 2217 and 2215. These may help.
