How active are your rays.

Were they more active when pups or adults?

I've had this guy for almost 3 months now and he keeps on becoming more active/inquisitive. But I've heard from other people their rays are very timid/hide under the sand when frightened.

I had him in a washing basket for a couple of weeks. Then moved him into a 6x2 with a pair of bass. Now there are 7 earth eaters in with him as well. Slowly added fish and he didn't even seem to notice or show any signs of stress.

Still occasionally hand feed him, but trying to let him fend or him self on the bottom. Which he seems to be doing fine.

I've only ever seen him hide under the sand maybe twice.

Most days I come home and he's just cruising in the current from the outlets.

Took a short video. Anybody elses Rays do/have done this? Pretty cool to watch.

Cheers

Sam

He loves it. Haha. Yeah I hope he keeps it up. Would look great bigger disc, in the big tank doing that! Just Guna have to get rid of some of the more boring fish... So pretty much all of them haha. Except for a few I've grow found of. Ornatus, Bass, Snooks and Jardini.

Still looking at this acrylic from China. Great price. But just have to enquire about import tax and make sure it's not to much!

Generally speaking. A ray shouldn't spend a lot of time at the surface of the water, and is usually a sign of sickness. However, Sam's ray is clearly swimming with purpose into the current of the filter, which is common behaviour for happy well adjusted rays. If Sam's ray was slowly floating up to the surface and just drifting around, I'd be concerned. But it isn't... it's loving life!

Nice ray mate, darkened up a lot since you've had it. Looks more Leo than Motoro now which is cool.

I haven't noticed a decrease or increase in activity as rays grow/mature. I think it is more an individual thing. Some love swimming up the sides and into currents, others will rarely leave the floor.

Alex

my pair rarely leave the floor, even as pups. cruise around really slowly and cover little ground with each time they move. when the food goes in though, there all over the joint, but still wont come off the substrate.
mine bury themselves all the time......... just for fun i swear too. ill be sitting there watching tv then notice a huge sand storm in the tank and both rays gone.

your ray is a champ Sam, thats awesome!!! colours lookk amazing too.

Looks like he's just playing in the current, quiet the character. My synodontis catties also do this.

He spends a lot of the time on the substrate also.

I want to make sure he is getting enough food so I usually hand feed him. I'll keep an eye on him and if he needs to be separated because he's not getting enough food I will do that.

He was about 10cm disc when I got him and is now 13cm disc in the time I've had him. bit less that 3 months.

When I first got him his wings were pretty much see through and had a pink coloration on the underside of both wings. They have definately thickened up as they are no longer see through and where it was a pink colour has now gone white.

Cheers for the replies.

Sam

Do you feed him any live food? Or too small for glass shrimp?

K.V. The law is fine. Otherwise I wouldn't be posting videos of the little guy wink.gif

Anka. I was feeding him earth worms and blood worms. Now I feed him hikari carnivore sinking pellets. I reckon he'd take down little glass shrimp fine. But I haven't given him the chance yet.
