Heys guys has anyone setup an aquaponics system using there tank inside, I have been thinking could I use the tank I

already have stocked with african cichlids and just put a plant box above this, would this essentially clean my tank at the same time.

Short answer is.... Yes.

You could set up an indoor herb garden for your cooking. Obviously you'll need lights to grow the plants.

I go there for the plants for my garden, very well priced and always have something a little out of the ordinary. Ive seen some awesome set ups inside that might be able to help you.

I think I might try a little Indoors AP setup for Aquatic Plants to go into my 3 foot planted and some basil.

Should not be that difficult to make one out yourself. Could even use a floating basket assuming the fishes don't jump.

I think the important thing will be then to work out what sort of plants depend mainly on nitrates without much micronutrients to grow otherwise you could be adding supplements to the water to assist with growth. Probably cheaper to do a water change then.

Just a note, that was a trial that became permanent. I have moved to Perth last week, so i will be looking at beautifying that setup a great deal!

I have found that succulents have been the best performing plants by far. Herbs/Veg etc require a lot more light than i have been able to provide so far. Although now i have my own place, i will probably revisit some edible plants.

I would like to try and have a nice inside grow bed that is not at the top of the tank. The plumbing shouldn't be too hard.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are planning on eating the plants, you cant use any aquarium meds. If the plants absorb any of the meds, then you are eating them too. I dont know about some of the more sensitive fish species, but with the more hardy tropicals i have kept, this has not been a problem. The only meds that i used for years was salt and i didnt have any problems.

I saw a set up growing baramundi in a shed with a lean to green house out side for the veg. He was growing barra year round though having some difficultly keeping the water warm enough in winter.
