I wouldnt mind a male spinolatus (as long as it is the one with the yellow belly), but i wouldnt pay $80 for a protomelas :x I havent seen them in shops so they may be worth that much though :p

Cam you give any more info on the phenochilus? E.g. colouration of the fish, colouration of the parents, whether the parents are related and price. I might want 4-5 depending.

Considering the spilonotus is a large fish, I doubt they would be sexable at 7cms :\
For info on phenochilus, try GOOGLE for some homework - try Placidochromis phenochilus Tanzania. If you don't know what colour the parents become, you shouldn't be considering buying any. :\
My apologies in advance if you or anyone gets offended with my tone. I just get so annoyed at people who want to buy good fish and haven't got a clue what they are shopping for. Breeders put in a lot of time and effort with their fish - it's nice when they go to a home where they can receive the care they require. ;)

Guys won't quote on sexes, sorry too risky till I rip them out of the tank.. won't split colonies either.... especially fish like spilonotus.

I'd be very surprised if you couldnt pick a male out of a colony at 7cm. They wouldnt be coloured up, but the dominant male should have some colour and be the largest. No probs if you dont want to split them.

Anita, I am not completely in the dark about phenochilus :p . The males should be a nice blue with speckled lighter blue (number increases as they age), females tend to have a bluish sheen turning to blue as they mature (not as blue as the males). The females can also have less blue as they mature and become a more silvery colour. The same can go for juvies, some having a more blue colour, others having more silver. Considering the variation in blue i think asking is a valid question.

www.malawimayhem.com/prof....php?id=78 for an example of a bluer female

Thanks hlokk. Good to see you do know something about phenos after all :) As I said, no offence intended and I am glad to see none was taken :b
Maybe for such an indepth description of the fish, you would be better off ringing the seller direct as these things are often misinterpreted over the net ;)
It's a bit like asking what colour is your frontosa isn't it? :o :lol

NO IDEA, they have actually been growing for 10 months in a malawi display with ngara and yellows but I seriously doubt it. Probably need a few more months as I've heard they spawn at about 1 and a half years and these guys would be 12-14months

I was wondering whether I could get some pics of the acei perhaps? Send them to xlr8[at]iinet.net.au if its possible and not a problem. Otherwise it might be possible to pop in and see them irl :p (i'm in wembley). I just wanted to know what variety they are (i.e. blue or black, yellow or white tail). I'd be interested if they are blue (depending). I'm in no rush though.
