hi all . laugh.gif laugh.gif

i bought 2 of these for my 6x2x2 which houses about 60 fish on the weekend and all i can say is wow what a filter..

it cleaned up my tank in no time flat and has cut my cleaning time down by 90 % at least.

I ve told danny that i would submit some before and after photos along with a report on his web site and when i get time will post the photos up here so that those who havent seen the filter or the demo will get an idea of what they are and how they work.

i would recommend these to anyone , they the best filters i have used in the 10years i been keeping fish and the price is very competitive imo.

cheers Brad. 8) 8) 8)

IMO yes you can use it in a fry setup (pending how much air is going through it). Obviously you wouldn't use this or most other filters on fry just a few days old. But for those fry a bit older then I would say go for it.

People that have sand and plecos would understand this with all the poo on the bottom of the tank, makes gravel cleaning a nightmare!

Does the aqua genie clean all the poo off the bottom of the tank?

The theory behind it suggests that it will work far better with sand or bare bottom tank than with a gravel substraite.

I have one in my grow out tank which I am trying, I will give you my honest feedback when it has been going for a while.

I have been asked alot for some feedback on the these filters. The full testing to compare them against other sponge and side filters will take some more time to do properly, however I can give some early impressions:

The filter is quite expensive compared to a sponge filter which I use in most tanks. The grate on the front of the aqua genie will not stop small fry from getting into the filter, possibly need to fit a flywire mesh over it for that purpose. I like the air curtin effect and the current it gives.I found the quality of the filter itself good but the quality of the fittings very poor. My siphon tube broke at the join where you can split it, however this made it to short to be any use in my setup. I replaced it with a hose from bunnings. This also cut out the need for the tape to break the siphon as that was also a poor solution to breaking the siphon action as the tape only lasts a couple of times befor needing replacement. I that the tape will be replaced in the future with a valve.
The selling point of this filter is the cleaning out system, however I found it to be of little difference to a quick syphon of the dirt from a normal bare bottom tank. The sponge itself only needs a good rinse out every couple of months.
After a full run I can give you a better idea of how it stacked up in keeping the tank clean but inital impressions tell me the units are not worth the extra money they cost.

Hope that helps

Tony

hi tony i have two in my 4x2x2 and they've been going for a month. I took the marbles out of the inside to have a look to see what bacteria was on them, they were still as shiny as the day they were put in....next to no bacteria on them. So I swapped the marbles for ehine ceramic noodles, now it holds 100 x more bacteria and works fine, and siphens well.

I suppose in theory the need for bacteria filtration lessens since you are completely removing the caught waste from the tank on a regular basis. The bacteria will still be useful for dissolved waste of course.

I'd like to see a comparision done between this unit and a canister by measuring the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels using the same size tanks. If levels are controlled more efficiently by removing waste rather then waiting for it to breakdown then Aqua Genie will be in a class of its own.

Hi

Andy - you must have some fine eyesight being able to see bacteria lol - because you cannot see it doesnt mean it isnt there, though I do know what you are trying to say and I have difficulty believing that a smooth marble surface could hold much good bacteria.

Tonys' comments resemble my first impressions at the demo - simply being able to remove waste easily does not merit the extra cost IMO. Squeezing out media in a filter is easy.
