Hi again all,

For those with a Astro external canister filter, could you please let me know what order you place the media?  Trays?

Out of the box it has the media sitting in this order (top to bottom - which would also be the easiest to service)

A Wool filter/Black sponge

B Ceramic (Quartz Ring?)

C Bio Balls

On the pamphlet it's really messed up if you can make sense of this

Seems to show the filter wool and black sponge at the bottom?

So top to bottom - B, C, A

Anyone decided the optimal config?

Tony

I have two of these filters, and I use noodles bottom, eheim Substrat in middle, and sponge top

Mechanical first, Bio last. So noodles, bioballs etc are bio, sponge etc is mechanical

Thanks Jason I might put the sponge on top too.

Hi Leichardti - thanks sorta got that... but it's not obvious what the water flow is internally, I'll have another look when I open it next if I can take a better guess. ie) for particular eheims the inlet is at the bottom and outlet at the top... so mechanical at the bottom

I might have the media sorted wrong way around, but that's the way I've always had it and two Astro 2212s keep a 6x2x2 clean. I really like how quiet these filters are, so you can't hear any noise when they're running. If I hear any humming noise at night, I can't sleep. If you find out I've got the media in the wrong way, I'll swap it around. Worked for me for a couple of years though, and Im a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

If the flow is from the bottom up i'd put the quarts rings first as there not very porous and allow good flow threw out with the hollow centres. Then i'd put coarse sponge to fine sponge with fine white filter pad on top, then all your more porous media. This helps it from getting clogged up then finish off with another fine white pad on top. I'd also put a pre-filter on the intake strainer to keep it all cleaner for longer. Doing it this way and using a sludge buster tablet or powder every now and then you should only have to clean out the whole cannister once a year.

to be honest it isnt a big issue doesnt matter where you place the sponges - cause when enough crap goes through your filter the sponge blocks up first - i think this is why a lot of cannisters have them at the top - easier cleaning... find out which way the water flows from top to bottom or bottom to top... then make your own decision :)

if it works good leave it - if not change it around - most of the trays are interchangeable...

i actually run all 3 trays with noodles but have a big sponge on the intake in the tank that pre filters majority of crap :)

Thanks a lot guys. Being my first external canister I'm not used to having choice of media. I'm used to the internal filter that is very specific.

Astros should come all ready to go - the media inside should stay the way it is. <br />If you want, in the future, you can swap the white pad with a black sponge if the flow starts to decrease :)
