We had the granddaughter of the original owner of Vebas bring in some old school pictures today. We are hoping to get a lot more pictures and stories of the beginnings of the shop to set up a history wall at some stage smile.gif

A timeline on the wall is a great idea!

Is that Justinian St , Palmyra in the pic ?

I can remember all the tanks in the sheds out the back of there and also a big pond but that was only about twenty years ago not fifty, lol.

Yeah, it was originally set up in the house in Justinian St back in 1948, and was there until the early 90s I believe. The man in the photos is Jim van der VEen and his I believe his wife's maiden name started with BAS, which is where the name of the business originated from. I am really looking forward to learning more about the history behind it smile.gif

Very cool find.
I missed out on the early years of Vebas, but have been told some pretty cool stories of when Harry owned it.

Not 100% sure, didn't get a chance to talk to the granddaughter about it for too long as it was fairly busy when she was in. Looking forward to getting a much more complete account of the early days from her brother and mother, who were apparently a lot more involved with the business than she was. Heh heh, Vebas started about the same time Harry was born... probably not many people around who remember the really "early" days wink.gif

I used to catch carp in the river and sell them for $1.00 to them about 35 years ago!

I will check with my dad and see if he has any stories to tell. suposedly my pop( who i never met but some how got the fish bug from) helped setup all the stands for vebas in the beginning. he in return end up with a bunch of tanks and fish at his house. Dad has told me the story of my pop breeding firemouths and oscars when he was a young kid. I will see what else he can tell me.

I can also remember Vebas moving to a small factory unit in North Fremantle for a short time before moving to their present location. wink.gif

50 Years wow long time.
Pat maybe you should think about taking more than 5min off work and take this lady
out for a cupper for more of a chat about the history of the shop it would be good value.
i remember harry i used to call him happy harry because he always seemed grumpy to me
but i was quite a lot younger then laugh.gif
