adam the idea of liming the ponds is to increase the alkalinity in the ponds to stop rapid pH fluctuations (maintain stable pH) during the night when oxygen levels have dropped from the algae photosynthesising.

Sajica you are right that is one of the reasons as to why Lime is placed in the ponds following construction and after harvest.

the liming I was referring to was the practise of ad hock addition of several hundred grams of lime once every couple of weeks during the production period.

I know this is a very old post, but in geraldton my pop used to have a hobby farm with 8 dams, some over 50 m long by 20 m wide, we were starting a marron farm we had more then you could poke a stick at. We had been breeding up there for well over 10 years the advice we got from calm with their breeding program was: 1 male to 7 females thats how we stoked new dams.

To tell if a marron is male flip it over on to its back hold the tail straight out and its back legs closest to the start of its tail it has two penis's (lucky buggers lol)one on the base of each leg. And the little fins (forget their proper name for them) running along the inside edges of the tail in males are one peice in females they have the same little fins but they are split into two like two fingers, to help hold onto there eggs. Thats the easiest way to sex marron. I tryed to breed them in tanks and had no luck and found others didnt either.

Hope this is useful to someone!

I just thought I would add the there is at least one person down the the south-east of WA that is farming the blue marron. I studied marron during aquaculture studies and he was the only one I was able to find in the country doing them in a commercial manner. There was also a few in Germany.

Cheers ben
