maybe worth elaborating a bit more man.

wood catfish could be reffered to as a panaque or L number (as some eat driftwood) or you talking more of the gulper catfish variety (as i have commonly seen them sold as wood catfish)

I'll give this a bump as I've been searching for driftwood catfish (auchenipteridae) for a long time ever since I acquired a common woodcat (trachelyopterus galeatus) just over a year a ago. Would love to know if there are any others out there even interstate (I'm in Adelaide). I know that there's a woodcat allowed to be brought in the country, it's just that I've never seen them on any of the wholesalers and I've been searching for a few years now!

I haven't seen them available for years, try your luck in QLD. From memory they were coming from Bayfish.
Good luck, they are a great species.

I have a couple of Fishers woodcats (Trachelyopterus fisheri) and a very old trachelyopterus galeatus, they are not for sale.

I know this is an old post but am also curious as to who has / can get more driftwood cats.

I got one on the weekend at Pet Magic that they said theyd never seen on the fish lists before so they bought it, and I was the lucky bugger to spot and grab it, never seen them before, awesome little fish - im sure its the trachelyopterus galeatus variety.

Are there any more of them at Pet Magic?

Here's some of my Trachelyopterus fisheri. I've got 6 fisheri's and 4 of the galeatus. What you describe must be a fisheri as they're the ones that have been available through AI lately. Also I just checked out AI's current stock list this morning and they've got more fisheri's. One of these days I got to take some photos of the galeatus but in typical adult auchenipterid fashion I count myself lucky to see them a few times a year!

It must be a fisheri as it looks nearly identical. Are they rare and what are they worth in your opinion?

Saturday was the first time I seen one so I impulsed bought badly then prayed my bichirs didnt eat him. Its not too shy neither, thought it would have hid a lot.

Ill try get a pic or two tonight.

And if you could plozbort  a couple pics of the galeatus would be awesome!

Hey all, they were rare but they're farm raised in Indonesia these days at least the fish A.I. get and there's probably a good chance you'll see them available more often than not. And as for price I paid $35 each for mine but that's from my LFS who looks after me very well. I've seen for as high as $70 so to answer your question Jules, they're probably worth $40 - $50 imo. I've also managed to find some pics of the Galeatus when they were in my quarantine tank. They're not the best photos but it's better than nothing, enjoy.  :)

Im convinced mine is a galeatus now, the eye is very close to the mouth like yours is and its more speckled like that.

awesome fish, so I did alright paying $14.95 plus PCS discount.

Interesting on the price, as I saw a post from 2003 where they where whole sale pricing at $120 a piece.

Wow $14.95 + discount! That's a great buy. I should've mentioned that my fisheri are still small at 10cm and that my galeateus are between 20-25cm so I'd be surprised if your fish is indeed a galeatus. Perhaps uploading a pics would help, either way they're a neat fish and very audible too because whenever i'm preparing food for the fisheri's they start grunting with excitement!
