Hi all, ive had my tank setup for 3 - 4 months now, Looking to upgrade it, What i was planning on doing was getting a bright LED light, changing the sand to coral sand ( bunnings sand in there atm) And i want to get better rocks like the one in the second photo witch is the hardest part to find or get, am i going in the right direction by upgrading the sand and light ?, and where do i find these rocks? or something similar that looks more natural and awesome ( darker colour prefered)

Thanks in advance!

Attached File  FISH.jpg   65.95KB   7 downloads (my tank)

Attached File  fish2.jpg   12.85KB   6 downloads ( what i want my tank to look like)

The tank is 1500x1500x500 (360L) and i currently have 14 peacock cichlids ranging from 4cm - 8cm

Id be looking at riprap/scour protection rock (I think its granite, i dunno) from a civil construction supplier/quarry... Its pretty easy to find around the place... Thats what I use... See the darker rocks in the photo below.

Lil tip for a great effect.... Go to the beach/marina get some limestone/sandstone rocks... Take them home and put them in boiling water to sanitize them before they go in your tank... Take them out, get a drill and a masonry drill bit and customise your rocks to your liking :) easy, cheap and effective!
Limestone helps buffer and stabalize the ph in your tank

Dark rocks on a white substraight looks awesome though. My last malawi tank was black background, dark rocks and white sand.... Really sets off the great colours of the malawis.

Limestone is a great buffer but personally i reckon it looks kinda dull. But thats just my opinion.

Well, ummm... There were tons dumped on the side of the road in a new estate up my way. They were to be used for water run off, scour protection beside culverts and what not. I liberated an armload. I picked smaller ones but there were heaps of bigger ones too. They look a dusty blue colour when dry but appear black when wet.
