Hi Guys,

Firstly, thank you for allowing us to sponsor the club and be part of this forum.  I'm very happy to help out the clubs!

Secondly, I thought I'd share some info on the Vitalis foods and how it differs to all others out there. Sorry about the cut-and-paste job. It's from one of my regular emails ;)

Vitalis is a premium aquaculture product imported from the UK and is currently being used by more than 160 of the public aquariums world wide.  It is also being used by all of the public aquariums in Australia including National Zoo & Aquarium in Canberra.  We work very closely with the vets and curators of these establishments to ensure a feeding regime is established so that the proper nutritional requirements are delivered to the inhabitants.  Our consulting vet is Dr Rob Jones, who is also known as The Aquarium Vet and is the leading vet to all of Merlin Entertainment Group’s aquariums in Australia and New Zealand.  We work with him very closely to ensure that the correct nutritional levels are being achieved when feeding the animals at the public aquariums.

Vitalis is also the only aquaculture food that uses all 'human grade’ raw ingredients.  The Fish meal (atlantic blue whiting), Mussel, Shrimp, Krill, Squid and seaweed are all human grade. The minerals are also ‘wind swept’ grade which is the finest available to ensure consistency in distribution.  Also there are no terrestrial cellulose in the diets which is not digested by most of the fish species.  We use 5 different type of algae and nori seaweed.  There are NO cereals, 'soya bean’  meal or pea meal or 'wheat germ’ derivatives used in our products to replicate the necessary vegetable matter.  Many of the other leading products use these as their main ingredients and are either genetically or chemically modified so that the fish can digest them but not necessarily providing any benefit. The only starch used in Vitalis is chemically modified starch used to bind the pellet (much like a sausage skin) during the low temperature extrusion.  As the fish are unable to digest the starch, once expelled by the fish, it is then used as a carbohydrate food source by the filter bacteria.  You should take a moment to check some of the ingredients listed in the other brands.

Our Marine Range and Fresh Water range of foods differ due to their mineral compositions.  As you may know, marine fish and fresh water fish intake the minerals in totally different ways and our product accommodates this.  The different pellets types are also of varying color, smell and texture depending on the main ingredients. One would think this to be an obvious observation but again not consistent with any other pellet that is available.

The main differentiator between Vitalis and other commercially available pellets is it’s soft texture.  It is extruded at very low temperatures to ensure that the essential vitamins and minerals are not destroyed in the baking process compared to many of the other brands in the market.

Because of the low temperature production, the Vitalis Flake food is also a unique formulation. Unlike other flake food where the vitamins leach into the water, Vitalis uses a unique emulsion encapsulation technique to ensure the water soluble vitamins are encapsulated in a lipid layer and then in a water layer and so on, much like a Russian doll. The end result is that all the vitamins and minerals are digested by the fish as the flake food is being consumed.

We also have Frozen Food Enrichments to supplement existing frozen foods.  It is basically an emulsion made up of all the vitamins, minerals and immune stimulants that you pour onto the frozen foods. This helps reduce the oxidation process of frozen foods, where existing nutrients are degraded and re-introduces the essential vitamins and minerals that are in the Vitalis foods. This process also assists with the transition from frozen to pellet/flake foods as the fish are then used to the ‘smell’ of Vitalis.
