[Redevilz]

Hey all,

I collected this rock from Bridgetown and it looks like there is a little bit of rust on it. I was wanting to know if it would be safe to put in an aquarium? The tank is a 4x35x45cm tank with 4x geophagus Tapajos and 5x L066 plecos.

Personally I don't think so

I have always day success with:
1. Scrub or high pressure clean
2. Soak (or even paint liberally) with strong peroxide solution.
3. Leave in the sun for a week or two.

Iron, the commonest of all metals, is normally present in nature in the form if iron oxide, i.e. rust. It follows that if you have rocks containing iron, betrayed by rusty streaks and patches, it will not normally present a chemical problem for your fish since the rust, iron oxide, is inert, However, if there is enough rusty material it will discolor your water, so rocks that are heavily 'rusted' should not be used. A few patches or spots of rust here and there on rocks is not a problem.

Ive used rocks with iron/iron oxide present before in big tanks with no visible effects. The thing is you dont see the medium to long term issues that could possibly be caused by exposing fish to possibly elevated levels in the confines of a smallish tank. Dunno, Im sure someone like Syd or Ollie could give you a better answer.
