Hey all! I am planning on building a pebble stone 3D background and I have a few questions for people who had experience in the area, or just have knowledge or advice in the area.

Such as; Where can I buy black aquarium safe silicone to stick all the stones together?

and What is the best type of stone you have used and where did you buy it from?

Thanks all for your time in reading my post  :D.

G'day mate,

I've made heaps of backgrounds for tanks, for little non structural jobs I use selleys glass silicon, around $9 a tube from Bunnings. It's %100 silicon and its acetic cure (the vinegar smell when drying) so safe to use in your aquariums around 48-72 hrs after use. It's only in clear though maybe someone could point you in the right direction for black

The smiling rock in Wangara sells nice stone as well as wangara sands and soils.

Could I suggest that you maybe get a piece styrofoam and cut it to the size of the back of your tank, this will give you a solid backing to attach pebbles to and also allow you to scoop some foam out to sink stones into or double up for extra layers.
You can also use a black pond sealer paint (cromlins) to touch up any areas in between which adds some depth.
It's a fun project, let us know how you go :)

Cheers that is a great idea! the black pond paint idea!! I already have a large piece of foam I was going to cut up and make a 3D background with but I was afraid of all the resin and concrete and the long/ short term affects it may have in the tank on the inhabitants so I thought foam, pebbles and aquarium safe silicone would do the trick and ultimately be less risky.

Cheers for the ideas

That would be fine, riggers built a wicked foam 3d background for his old "skyrim tank"!

Cool as! The sealer that I've used on all my in tank stuff is cromellins Pond sealer, available at Bunnings in 2 sizes, 3 colours, blue cream and black. You can mix the black and cream to make varying degrees of greys and it's quite thick so gets in the gaps. You can use little brushes to 'dap' it on for a textured look but a car sponge makes a great texturing tool :)

the poly is great stuff to work with, it shrinks down to different natural looking shapes when you burn it with a bottle oxy torch or pen torch, but the fumes are uber toxic so best done outside!! :)

let us know how you go :)
