Hey guys, I have been in the Freshwater game a little while now, but I think its time to put my foot in the door of marine :) just starting to build up a collection of things for a Marine tank. list of things I have and need to get so far

What I have (pictures below)

6x2x2 tank as the marine display (has large overhead where I have mounted some LED Lights)

2 120w Led Light units (has moonlight features etc rated for marine)

Hailea Chiller

Shit load of Base Rock

standed 4 ft tank (to build into sump)

at the moment just collecting second hand gear to finish. if anyone has any decent wave makers, pumps, skimmer etc up for sale or laying around let me know :)

Ok, im looking into now is building the sump out of the 4ft tank, got me stumped there so many designs on google, be awesome to see other peoples designs and what works :) let me know on designs please :) more pics the better.

And yes the tank is fresh water atm, I did buy it to become marine but I hate to see a empty tank sitting there lol so just temp random stuff in there atm.

Nice. Looking forward to watching this thread.

So you're going to need to seed that rock I assume? How long does it take to make it into 'live' rick?

That IS a shit load of rock !!!

I found it heaps easier to organise the scape using only base rock. You can pretty much build it outside to how you want it, drill for support rods and mark areas to glue together (with aqua-kneed-it) rather than lifting rock in and out of the tank and trying to prop things together without them falling over onto the glass!

Once I had the base rock how I wanted it and in the tank with the water, I let it cycle as is for 4 weeks, did a 50% water change and then added a half a dozen choice pieces of live rock covered in coralline and a few small bits of coral and let that cycle through for another 4 weeks before another 50%change and then slowly adding some fish and corals.

Do the sump yourself, since you already have the 4fter, you can get custom cut pieces of glass from vebas or aquotix cheap as, and then just silicone them in where you need to.

**Just make sure that you leave enough room in your sump to take any drain back from the Display tank in the event of a power failure **

For equipment - get the best skimmer you can afford rated for ~ 2 -3 x your tank vol, and flow pumps you want to try and turnover 20 - 30x the tank vol/ hr - I went a couple of sharkman great white pumps from guppies on my tank; small, powerful and cheaper than the big names.

best of luck, enjoy!

hey guys slowly getting along just brought a tunze DOC skimmer 9011. It took my eye since it has a built in pump, rated to 1200L tank and so much shorter than normal skimmers so will do well in my sump. Now I got the size of it I hopefully will have time to start building the sump today

Is that design gonna give you enough clearance if power/pump fails?
