Hi there,

I bought a whole lot of assorted cichlids a month or two ago and among them is what I think to be a male red empress al though he is yellow and blue with no red on him (Is that possible?).

The second is what I believe to be a female red empress or some sort of hybrid peacock but I assume they cant breed with peacocks and vice versa.

I will try get some pictures up tomorrow as the female just gave me twenty or so fry today when i noticed she had a mouthful.

Cheers.

You assumed wrong, a lot of the Malawi cichlids will cross. If your unsure of the source, then presume there crosses.

I suggest you cull the fry to be safe.

I'll grow them out a little and see if they resemble red emp fry and if not they will be a little treat for my cichlids.

Note that the male is much more blue IRL. I just couldn't take a proper flash photo without them getting spooked.

Cheers

Last female pic looking at head structure and front body half.
Red emp x spilonotus.
Could be anything though.
Even if it's a pure red emp,,, it's not in good form to continue.
Still beautiful,,, and if you keep the fry,,, make sure they never leave your tanks at home unless dead.
It's the hybrids that almost look like pure species that are the real threats.
There is good bloodline red emps in Perth now,,,, we don't want to mess with that.

Great.. Had to suffocate a fair few fridges full of fish at work but I am not looking forward to culling my own fish.
Cheers for the advice guys.

I have seen a couple of colonies of Red Emp on gumtree lately, is there much of a demand for them?
Was considering getting some if these were hybrids.

Cheers

Red emps don't get much $$ as there are a lot of people breeding them. If you want them get a heap of juvi's from a quality source on here mate or from one of our sponsors.

Just had a thought, my blue and yellow male could just be a low quality peacock?
I know they usually show vertical stripes but mine may have more dominant stripes due to less colour?

Any thoughts?

Cheers
