Hi everyone
Found this plant growing in one of the many local ponds.
Any idea what it might be?

Hi guys
i disagree Matt.I dont think this is a vallis.I know the one your thinking of, this plant is more like a stem plant from what i remember. Its also in some of the northern lakes( carine from memory)
I didnt have much luck growing it , didnt put it in a high light tank though. ( on that note maybe it is vallis cause i cant grow that either...... biggrin.gif )

Yeh...its a bit like a stem plant, the local water birds love it, its mostly just bare stems in teh water, i had to grub around looking for some with leaves (much to the gf distress). It has a central stem with these very pale almost translucent leaves (that do look a bit like vallus), the leaves are only 5 - 6 cm long. It doenst seem to be branching at all though which has surprised me considering the amount of pruning that the birds are doing.
I havent put it in my high light tank, Im a little nervous about introducing any nasties (despite me washing it thouroughly) into the main tank, but depending on how things go I might try bleaching a bit and putting it in.

Hi Mike...it is a Potamogeton sp. probably 'small'. It doesn't quite look like crispus.

Okay I have looked up the book and I am tossed up between Potamogeton sp and Vallisneria caulescens.

From the pic I am leaning towards the V caulescens. according to The Aquarium Plant Handbook, it is an Australian plant, requiring a ph of 6.9 and will live in soft to hard water. It is not a stem plant and will reproduce via runners. It is different from other Vals in that the leaves are arranged alternately on a long stem instead of a rosette. In my opinion Matt get 10 points!

But Matt my 2cents isn't worth much! LOL!

I just checked the stuff that I have in my pond (sourced from a local lake) and I'm now certain that it is P. crispus.

I would like to try a local plant tank. Would it be hard to get local plants? Anything interesting?

Mike, I've found that it's requirements are pretty similar to Elodea sp. Once the tank gets too warm, the plants melt away.

Bugger...thanks Andrea.
The cuttings at the moment are sending out new branches at the juction of the leaf and the stalk.
Will just have to see how they grow.
Mike
