Well I guess it depends on how healthy and happy you want the fish to be vs The space, time and money you have.
Anything over 1000 L should be alright though.

I wouldnt want to keep one in 1000 ltrs. You might be able to keep it alive but thats not giving the fish any kind of life. I reckon my big tank is too small for a big rtc.
But thats always the argument with tb's in general.
I actually reckon Red is right. I would want at least double the size of my 1600ltr.
Interested to hear what johnno reckons... He's the one thats got runs on the board after all.

It isn't litres that is the issue, it is the floor space. Sure large volume is good, as it keeps water parameters more stable and takes longer for nasties to build up. Floor space is the real issue. No good having a 8x2x4 LWH.

Start at 8x4 as a minimum floor plan and work up from there.

I've grown RTC to 3'+ in a 8x3x2.5 and I don't think it's ideal.

My current Rtc is about 70cm. But I got it at 60cm so no way of knowing its history.

Large ponds can be bought and made relatively cheaply. Expense comes with upkeep.

I can't remember how many I've had over the years, they are a great fish, just not for everyone.

johnos RTC is magnificent, she is an absolute monster and she isnt even full size, im pretty sure she is in an 8x3x3 tho.

I agree with Alex.

 

I pond would be the ideal "tank" for an RTC. The one at Mido which I tried for a long time to get back into condition but no avail   Great fish but it was never happy in that 8ft tank. I was never happy to see it in the 8ft'er.

 

To house one properly IMO needs at least a 12ft pond. Or if anyone has been to Terry's house.... His pond would be the ULTIMATE TB house

 

TB's, as much as a lot of you love them, IMO 90% of them should be left in the rivers they came from. Nice to look at but they have a horrible life inside a glass box..

How about rainwater tanks? These would be great to house TB's. Worked at a place that housed broodstock barramundi in 20,000 litre water tanks with Perspex windows. Females were well over a metre / 20kg. Approx 10 fish per tank with no probs. Spawnings regularly.

tank size is dictated by the fish size... if the fish cant turn around easily then you need a bigger tank.... 6x2x2 is sufficient for smaller rtc's but once they hit 50-60cm 8x3x2 is a good size and then it just gets bigger after that... most rtcs dont live much beyond 3 foot in size... mostly due to how they have been kept and fed or lack of food..... 

im all for having live feeders in the tank at all times for snacks on the go... and once a day regular feed of non live food.... if its belly is rounded its happy... and once a week have a no feed day... if its really hungry it can chase feeders about  the loss of feeders is an indication as how much to feed... you'll find the happy medium where you know the food quantity is right when only the odd feeder disappears every now and then... they are a hungry fish but they also dont over eat... sometimes they wont eat for a couple days after a big feeder is eaten... its all learning process.... and have fun moving 60cm+ fish

IMO this is now more of an informative thread with indicators of price and tank requirements of RTCs, so is of benefit to the forum...

Tank busters are best kept in large round tubs so they can swim long distances in one direction. Instead of swimming the length of the tank and    in the end then turning around to swim the length back and    in the end of the tank and so on. What a life    my head hurts just thinking about it.

hahaha sandy... only if your fish is dumb... mine swing around before they hit the end  same with all fish... doesnt just apply to tankbusters... i think roundd tubs may not be so good... fish will get dizzy swimming around in circles lol
