Water Change With Sump

15 April 2017 - 09:10 AM

Hi.
I've just bought a 5ft tank with sump and was hoping for some advice as I've never had a sump before.

It appears to be fairly basic input and output with 5 chambers. I have media in the first 3 (coral and mats only) 2 heaters and UV light in 4th and pump in 5th chamber.

The brand is JAD ( I bought it as it looked good) and can't find much info on it on the net. ( I probably should have done a bit more research).

I was just wondering what I do when I do a water change.
Do I change water from the sump or from the tank?
Do I turn off the pump or just close the valves or do I leave running and use the output hose to drain the water?

Also, I now have sand and not gravel (once again for looks) how do I clean this without syphoning the sand up?

The tanks only been going for a week now.

Any feedback/advice is welcomed.

Thank you

Advice On Aquarium For Sale

11 January 2017 - 02:14 PM

Hi all

Just after a bit of advice on an Aquarium if that's OK.

I currently have a Blue Planet 160L (a present quite a few years ago) that I have Malawi Cichlids living happily.  I am looking to go to a bigger tank (to fill a space and for visual reasons).

I have been looking around in the South of river areas and on-line and found a store in Wangaratta).  They have the following for sale:

1.5M 410L Deluxe Aquarium with in-built Sump.
It has 10mm toughen glass on an aluminium stand/cabinet,  with poly-carbonate multistage Sump with UVC Steriliser and 4500 ltr/hr flow.

it starts at $1650 with 6 fluro lights up to $1950 with 108W LED w/- UW and remote
Tank size
1802 x 495 x 800mm
Sump
1150  x 350 x 450mm

Sorry cant attach photo but its on the web site.

It looks good in the picture and the price very reasonable (I was expecting around $3k plus).

Any feedback would be welcomed.

Thanks

Noisy Astro Filter

24 November 2016 - 10:07 PM

Hi.

I have two Astro 2208 canister filters going. The newer one, just out of warranty, has just started to be very noisy. I've taken the cover off but it looks like the impeller is in a sealed area. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix or how to get the impellor out ....or do I need to purchase a new one.

Thank you

Gravel

20 May 2016 - 09:22 PM

Hi.

I have a 210ltr tank and have high nitrate level around 10ppm.

I feed my cichlids every second day and check for any leftovers ( not usually as they're quite hungry) I do a 10% water change every 2nd day, with 30% once a week including vacuum of gravel. I have nitrate pad in the filter and change every 3 weeks. The cichlids are all doing well. I do have about 2 inches of gravel, so wondering if this is too much for the tank.
Look forward to feedback
Thank you

Hi. I have electric yellow, blue Dolphins, red peacocks and Kadango reds in my tank. Not sure what this one is as there are no others like it. Thought it might be a dolphin but it has a white strip down its back so it may be ill.
