Nomenclature changes in two Central American cichlids
By Juan Miguel Artigas Azas

A new paper by Rico Morgenstern brings to light facts that force important nomenclature changes for two well-known Central American cichlid species: Parachromis friedrichsthalii and P. loisellei. The paper details the circumstances and presents an examination of the fish collections made by Emanuel Ritter von Friedrichsthal in Central America between 1838 and 1841. The most important results establish that the fish we now know as Parachromis loisellei was in fact previously described as P. friedrichsthalii, a name we should now use when referring to this species. The fish hitherto known as Parachromis friedrichsthalii should now be called P. multifasciatus. The name Parachromis loisellei falls now in junior synonymy with P. friedrichsthalii. These changes may create confusion but get use closer to have a sounder picture of Central American cichlids taxonomy.
Morgenstern, Rico. 2018. "Fishes collected by Emanuel Ritter von Friedrichsthal in Central America between 1838–1841". Vertebrate Zoology. v. 68(n. 3), pp. 253–267 (crc09154) (abstract)

Interesting, seems the fish we know as P. friedrichsthalii, may have actually had some confusion around it's description and thus the fish we have should actually be P. multifasciatus, not sure if I've seen P. loisellei around in Aus, but apparently that is the true P. friedrichsthalii.
I understand that this might be old news for some, but was news to me, so thought I'd share. haha

#367587 My Umbees

Posted by Hood on 14 January 2020 - 02:17 PM

Sitting here waiting for the diazepam to kick in before a tooth extraction at the dentist...

Thought I'd share a couple of quick crappy phone pics of my big male Umbee. (a few months old, he's grown and filled out a lot more since these were taken.) Currently have been making some tank changes to get him to interact with the female I have in with him to get some pair bonding happening, which seems like it might be happening now. Got another female waiting in a spare tank just in case.

Fingers crossed I can get some spawning soon. Absolutely spectacular fish that don't get the recognition they deserve. They are big brutes, but also big sooks, they really do have nothing on the aggression of Dovii in my experience, but that certainly doesn't stop a big male going rogue and decimating all other conspecifics in a tank should he so choose. It would really be nice to get some fry of these circulating again.

I hope you enjoy.
Cheers. 1ccab7ec434d91fd43a8c5c2462b2de4.jpg04d802a8620ae30f01b5e3206743f1cc.jpg4e8e890f36333d7483587423afd8e84a.jpg

I thought this had more updates... My bad. Lol

This male took out his female in the end sadly. So I sold the male. When netting him out I found fry in the tank. Turns out they were successfully spawning just in my zeal to keep the tank clean I was stupidly syphoning the wriggles out it seems. So I grew the fry out and got a new pair. The new male even more spectacular than dad. Hoping to see some spawning from this pair soon. I got some pics on my camera the other day. I'll share when I get a chance.

Thanks to Techden for the specials in the after Xmas sales. [emoji106]

Made a quick vid on my phone. I feel central american are massively under appreciated around Perth these days. I love them. [emoji41]http://cloud.tapatal..._000459_110.mp4

I dunno if that was the best way to share video from my phone...

Probably easier just to view it on Instagram here: https://www.instagra...d=143csjm6n5g4n

#364004 Bichir Breeding

Posted by Hood on 07 November 2017 - 05:56 PM

Hi all, thought Id document on my success in breeding tiger bichirs (polypterus endlicheri).

The pair consists of a male and a female (duh) with the female being roughly 45cm and 3.5 years old, and the male being 35-40cm and 3.5 years old.

I added grass mats which are key to breeding lower jaw species such as senegals, but I dont believe that they had much of an impact with the tigers as the eggs were scattered all over the tank. As you do with most species, I tried to re-create their natural environment by adding lots of real plants and cover.

The breeding was then simulated after heavy and varied feeding and a big cold water change. The breeding period lasted for around 4 days where they were continuously laying eggs with a total of 900+ eggs being laid in total.

I collected as many eggs as I could and separated them from the parents (the parents will eat the eggs). I placed the eggs in a small breeding box right near the a wavemaker so that there was water flowing over them continuously to prevent the growth of fungus.

Around 25 of the 900+ eggs hatched, this was most likely due to the male being inexperienced with fertilising the eggs so hopefully next time I get a larger number to hatch. The fry then hatched after 3 days and they were approximately 5-7mm long. They fed off their yolksack for the next week. After this week had passed I began feeding baby brine shrimp. However it became too hard for me too hatch enough brine for 3+ feedings a day as I am too busy (only just found out that aquotix sold frozen bb), so I switched to feeding crushed up (under the mortar and pestle) blood worms and daphnia. Quite a few of them started eating instantly and the ones that didnt eat died at around 6-7 day mark. I had approximately 12 fry that were readily taking the food and had grown a considerable amount. The fry were around 2cm and 2 weeks old when I had a power outage overnight which unfortunately killed all of them.

#359619 Diy Aquarium (Tempered Glass Build)

You could try it. But I wouldn't recommend it as tempered has very little flex rating before said shattering.

#359590 Hybrids

Posted by Hood on 14 February 2017 - 09:48 PM

Don't get me started LOL 'Hood' and I had somewhat of a heated discussion on this topic on another thread. Like them or not, they are here to stay as mankind has never been able to resist the urge to tinker with nature or the natural order of things.
On a personal level I prefer the original discus, angels etc though it is hard to argue against the stunning colouration of some of the aquarium varieties. My concern, like always, is that like Hybrids some where down the track we are never going to be sure what we are purchasing? I.e is this 'Calico' bn I am about to buy, the offspring of a pair of calico's, or a calico and a common, or calico and lemon and when I breed them what mix am I going to get. etc. Please don't all jump down my throat - I am playing the Devils advocate here!

And my confession is that I do breed ,calico, lemon and common bns but all in separate breeding  tanks. so no mixing of the strains.
Oh and a word of caution - there are by definition, differences between 'Line' breeding, 'selective' breeding and 'cross' breeding.

I know I really shouldn't post this as I am going to get rained on from a great height  LOL

I'll hold my tongue. [emoji14]

Great fish Petenia. Well done on getting some to pair up.

Cheers man. I got some greens too growing up in another tank but a lot smaller still. Loving the antics of them at the moment. Great fish. :)

Very nice, try some earthworms or mealworms.

Will do when I finally get the farm started up where I can stop the dogs from getting into it. They've been a pain bowling my current attempts over to get at the kitchen scraps. Haha
