Just picked up a 4 x slate cave row from Jackmack.
he made it to my specifications and he has done a good job.
if anyone is looking for any of these type caves , I would recommend checking his out.
They are well priced too.

The starting price is $15 for a single cave and $10 for each additional compartment,
I have 120x 30x30cm slate tiles so I should have them available for quite some time.

i always use these caves with removable lid.... very convenient when your selling catties and they wedge themselves in your cave and wont come out...  not to mention if you want to hand raise eggs you can get them out easy enough... especially handy when males are eating eggs.....and look at that they have left me some eggs

 

 

but most important thing is the cave is reasonably tight for the male otherwise he may not spawn in the cave... most catties dont naturally have square caves and i have found some species wont use them and you have to use a round cave... that seems to be the desired choice by catties that dont use square caves.... but majority use square slate cave...

prob more resembles the hole they dig into the river bank i would presume...

johnno how do they know what the hole resembles...all these catties are tank raised.

 

this is a interesting topic...

 

would like to do a survey and see what kind of strike rate people have with the different caves.

 

and what type of cave suits different catfish...there has to be evidence that suggest one cave is better for a certain species of catfish.

most of the catfish ive had have preferred the terracotta D caves over the slate, but 333's and the like all seem to like the smaller slate caves so they can wedge in, my 104's wont go near the slate cave but love the terracotta.

how do catfish know how to breed when they are tank raised? thinking its all pre programmed into their genetics... why do fish breed when you do a waterchange even though they have been raised in a stable tank all its life ??? lots of questions with only theories being the answer.... it can be applied to breeding in caves also... in wild they use whatever they can find... a hole in the river bank - a hollow log - hole in rock or tree root... there def isnt any square tunnels and caves for them and if the spot they find isnt suitable for spawning they wont breed in it - pretty simple... so they must like square caves as they find them good enough to breed in... but not all fish

This is the reason I want to make as many different sized caves as possible as not to limit what fish can and can't breed in them,
Do you think a cave that is tapered down toward the opening would have good results Johnno?

Once I get this cave business up and running I'll hopefully be able to have some more 'test fish' to see which cats like each sized cave.
I assume low ceilings and wider openings would be good for most but I am eager to hear some opinions?

What's funny I have d caves and slate caves in the 397 tank and they love the d caves the best

But in my bn tank they have both and prefer to breed under a rock so go figure they spwan where they feel is the best spot and safest
