Hey guys biggrin.gif
Have only recently tried my hand at keeping some vallis in my malawi tank and have a few questions that hopefully all you plant buffs can help me with biggrin.gif

Is there a right and wrong way to trim vallis?
Is there a way to reproduce it to keep myself in stock with this plant?,i have reproduced a number of amazon swords last year but i really am a complete plant noob 8O
Any help will be appreciated biggrin.gif

Cheers
Craig

Hi Craig,

Vallis propogate by runners (send out little plants from the main root sytem) and they can be cut off and replanted (thats what i did with mine)
As to trimming it...im not too sure, but someone else shoudl know.

Hope this helps a bit,

Giday Craig,

I have had no probs cutting the tips from vallis before, to the height you want. The leaves you cut will still live but stop growing, and before long the plant will send up more leaves.
As Craig mentioned vallis will propgate through runners, if your substrate is lacking in nutrient perhaps add some "pill or spike" form ferts to the base of where the roots of the vallis are. They are very hardy plants and once they get going they don't stop hehe.

HTH

Mike.

Hi nic
They should still send out runners but they will only be in the pot...the runners genrally 'run' very shallow so wont go down deep enough to exit the pot at the drain hole.
Vallis is also this strange plant that can either sit there for ages and not do much or just take off and go mad. In my various tanks it tends to sit there for many months and then suddenly just take off.

I've had vallis in my pond in pots and have sent out runners and if left long enough and neglected will end up with large root systems and lots of vallis everywhere around and in the pot.

Also had a terracotta pot with vallis in it, in my old planted tank and it did start to grow out of the pot with runners, mind you it was a small pot.
