Hi

I will be giving a talk at the February PCS meeting. The topic will be "Keeping and Breeding Freshwater Stingrays".

Stingrays have been a pretty hot topic on the forums as of late. Generally speaking the stingray scene is pretty new here in WA, making it an exciting time for stingray keepers and potential keepers alike. I will be doing my best to keep it relevant to the stingray scene in Australia. Some of the topics that will be covered will be;

  • Caring for pups
  • Feeding and Nutrition
  • Water Chemistry
  • Mating
  • General Care

I will do my best to answer any questions that anyone has on the night.

Look forward to seeing many of you there.

*committee; if their is anything that needs to be added to this thread, please feel free to do so.

Kind Regards,

Alex

Looking forward to it Alex.

In the mean time, I was just a little curious - do people keep f/w rays in tanks without barebottoms and minimal decor?

I've seen rays in tanks with just sand as substrate - is this the only alternative?

Rays are big animals. Any decor you add to the tank is only going to detract from the floor space that the rays have to move around in. You will also run the risk of your rays hacking themselves up on any sharp edges. Some people like to decorate their ray tanks, I don't. I like looking at happy animals with plenty of swimming space, not pieces of wood. These are also extremely messy animals. Substrate and wood (or any other ornament) is only providing more places for waste to build up. I attribute the success I have had and the health of my rays to the cleanliness of the environment I provide for them coupled with the best food I can possibly provide them.

I'll leave it at that for now. I'll see you at the meeting Anka.

The next club meeting will be Tuesday 5th February and will be on:

Keeping and Breeding Freshwater Stingrays

Presented by Alex / Peckoltia.

This is a presentation not to be missed.

Following the recent discussions on PCS, Alex has volunteered to share his knowledge with keeping and breeding freshwater stingrays.
Stingrays have been a pretty hot topic on the forums as of late. Generally speaking the stingray scene is pretty new here in WA, making it an exciting time for stingray keepers and potential keepers alike. He will be doing his best to keep it relevant to the stingray scene in Australia.

Some of the topics that will be covered will be;

Caring for pups
Feeding and Nutrition
Water Chemistry
Mating
General Care

The show table competition will be running as usual. If you need to borrow a tank from the club, make sure you book with a committee member.

Ray and Peter will have the canteen open showing everyone their kitchen prowess, and library will be available.

Our sponsor liason officer has organised some excellent prizes for the raffle table and members prize, so make sure you get down to the Rotary Hall, South Perth.

We hope to see you there,

PCS Committee

Almost. Probably got another 2-3 hours of work to do tomorrow before I'm happy with what I've got down.

Should be good. Look forward to meeting a lot of new people.
