Hi guys,

i've recently bought a small fibreglass tinny that i want to convert into a koi pond in the garden.

What are your recommendations on a sealer i can paint on the inside to make sure everything is water proof and safe for the fish? I want to avoid putting in a liner if possible.

And i've used one sealer from bunnings once on a small pond made of a large stone pot but it seemed to bubble up after a while and peel off.

Thanks for your help!

Sergio

I used cromellins
Not sure if it's the same as what you have used before.
I have it for my fibreglass pond and it is holding up just fine (1.5+yrs)

It does have a gritty texture

Crommelins product is the one bunnings carry. There must be better and cheaper options available, surely!
Ive used the Crommelins product before. Its quite pricey. Bubbling is a result of inadequate surface preparation or application and protection of the product.

I've also used the crommelins stuff to seal a bigass pot to turn into a water feature. Cannot fault it at all and it wasn't really that expensive?

do not use crommelins! they are a joke! i did my 6500L pond with it and bubbled within a week (a guy came out and said it was put on to thin) So i stripped it back and put on what he recomended (60L of this stuff) and it only lasted a couple of months b4 the first bubbles started showing and now its bubbled everywhere! my dad has used pool paint on his concrete pond and lasted more then 10 years b4 he had to re paint... obviously give it a good wash out as its pool paint but he had no problems (no idea what brand he used as it was ages ago)

Just prep the surface and use a flow coat to seal. Or to be sure to be sure put in some mat on suspect areas as well. Prep will be about the same. Try a fiberglass place and you may pick up some half cans. Ask them for a quote too as they may do it cheaper than you can...

You do have to put it on quite thick. And sand the surface to prep it.
This falls right outside my area of expertise but let me ask anyway:

- Being a dinghy, would you not already expect this to be waterproof?

- Plywood tanks and ponds routinely use fibreglass. Is your fibreglass likely to not be safe?

That's what I was thinking Leigh.

If its an old cracked boat maybe you should just buy some epoxy and glass mat and just add another layer

Cromlins is the goods! The bubbling is from poor surface prep as stated already..

If you need a hand with fibreglass give me a yell, I've been glassing boats for years, currently restoring a 1974 Bullet 1550 ski/race boat! :)

Crommelin Chemicals is in Welshpool in Division Street - don't get confused with Crommelins Machinery (where I work), we get about 15 calls a day asking to buy paints and stuff....

Basically it's two different brothers companies, buthave nothing to do with each other. :)

Thanks for the advice guys. Havent had the time to act on anything yet - will hopefully get a chance to start preparing the surface over the easter weekend!

It should be water proof already but its a very old dingy which is painted on the inside and flaking off... so will need to sand it back and wanted to seal it just in case the paint or something could hurt the fish.

Thanks again, i'll get back to you guys when i have something to report.
