Hi,

For some reason I now have tiny snails all over my 5 foot planted tank. No idea how they got there??? Anyway they are damaging my Java Fern so I want them gone. Is it ok to put a yoyo loach in with two small EBJD's (about 4cm) to help rid the snails? I know that yoyo's are suppose to be kept in at least 3 or more but wondering if anyone had kept just the one and how good are they at controlling snails.

Cheers.

how small are the snails ??? black like a big pin head ??? i used a 7-8cm flower horn to mow them down to an almost extinct level... buggers hiding on the inside on the sponge filter...
i imagine most cichlids would eat them anyway.....

My EBJD's don't touch them. They don't even eat the BN pleco fry in the tank though!

The biggest of the snails is about 4mm at this stage. I've probably always had them and the previous stock ate them. If you reckon most cichlids will eat them maybe I'll try putting some of my juvi JD's in there (about 4cm like the EBJD's).

I know they do but I was concerned whether a yoyo would be ok with my precious Electric Blue JD's and also if a sole yoyo is ok?

I,ve never had any problems with loaches before but i've never kept the yoyo, just get a small one. They are usually fairly placid, i've got clowns in my 6ft growout tank, with small to larger fish 2cms to 9cms. p.s and no snails.

I think loaches would be fine but I wouldn't risk your ebjd's with your common Jd's while there still so small smile.gif your JD's are awesome though. I have one in my display smile.gif

I had a ramshorn snail problem in an ex planted tank so I bought 2 yoyo loaches about 4cm from Aquotix.
One of them died about a week later, but the one remaining did an awesome job with the snails.
It was in the tank with a young colony of 5-6cm borleyi and never bothered the fish..that I saw.

I later moved it to a shed tank with snails and a breeding colony of lithobates.
The only time it seemed to chase a fish was when one was holding.
It would swim alongside the fish as if trying to get the eggs out of the fishes mouth.

I now have the yoyo in my big display tank and never bothers any fish.

Thanks for the info guys. Bowdy I'm so glad you like the JD. Gives me a nice rewarding feeling smile.gif Plenty more where they came from selling at Aquotix people smile.gif And yeah I don't think I'll risk mixing the regular JD's with my EBJD's.

Peter it definitely sounds like getting a small yoyo to clean up the snails is the way to go. They are ramshorn snails of some variety so hopefully a yoyo will do the trick.

Cheers guys.

Do you have to keep the yoyo loaches in a school? Or is is okay to get a single one?
Have you seen the link of Kleinz' Neosilurus ater? That could be another option?

Pretty sure they like to have mates around just like clown loaches.
I think clowns are better looking.

Get yourself a flock of Dwarf Chain Loaches. Will nail the snails, stay small and not bother any fish. Very playful fish as well so a group of 4-6 (or more) would look awesome in a big planted tank.

Wow ok. I thought snails were part of their natural diet. Maybe I'll try Aaron's suggestion then and try Dwarf Chain Loaches (not heard of them before so have to do a bit of research on them). I wanted to avoid clown loaches as they get too big.

You'll be waiting quite a while before the clown loaches grow bigger Jeff, very verrrry slow growing. You can always just sell him when he gets too big for you and just get another one smile.gif

Yeah ok cheers. So are you guys saying clown loaches are best for snail control then? Or you just like the look of them more? I'm only interested in getting rid of the snails.
