Has anyone tested power usage of various bits of aquarium gear?

I've seen the test kit in Bunnings but never been game.

Power bill has dropped since I've stopped using the 3x box LED units. I'm sure it's coincidence but it has got me wondering.

I bought a unit from Jaycar. about $20 at the time.

I could see how much wattage whatever I plugged into used. Was useful to see how much the heaters were coming on every 24 hours.

I used it to tabulate all the fish gear so I could work out what size generator I could use in case of power outages.

i have done it using the Belkin power meter.

It allows you to adjust how much electricity costs per kwh and can calculate year, month day, hour costs.

My tank costs about $400 a year to run.

Many thanks, I'll check these out. My wife isn't really convinced I'll change my buying habits but I guess it would be good to know.

I never thought of the heaters!

That's very generous of you. I'll probably end up buying one (or I could just stop buying stuff).

Most of your items you should be able to calculate easily just by checking their wattage and finding out how much a kilowatt of electricity costs you. Only thing thats a bit harder to put a figure on is heaters because without a meter its impossible to know how long its typically on per hour. But for most purposes it would be pretty simple to estimate and come up with a pretty accurate figure.

I seem to remember there were a few too many locked cells in that spreadsheet so just did my own.

I can see myself checking them out at Bunnings. I have to go in to replace three axe handles that broke at the axe head over the weekend (should of left them gathering dust).
