I built this filter about 3 months ago and it has been running smoothly since, the best thing about this design IMO is that it can be taylored to any size or scale.
mine cost me about 30 bucks + 30 for the pump (I already had the pump)
Tools: hand saw, power drill, hole saw, jig saw, think that was all lol.

Basic overveiw

Remember the measurement ars fluid!

As you can see my finished product was a little diffrant than my plans, I tried to input some bits that I had laying around from other projects biggrin.gif

i think if u made a bigger version and was using it under a tank u could probably have the intake pipe work off gravity and fit a pond up at the very top to pump the water back into the tank

The filter i construsted has a submersible Grundfos in centre section
The 2 outer are the inlets that go through filter medium then the pump is berried amongst a 1000 odd bio balls.

whats the overall sizes of it?
i'm just thinking that i would want it to be hiden inside a cabinet, rather than out in the open, esspecialy if its for a display tank

I was stoked with what Seriavo had designed and made... so i had a chat with him and decided to try and compact it a little more with out losing too much filteration ... I basically want two of these underneath my 5 x 2 x 2... and the pumps will be around 2,000ltr an hour.

So basically i will have... 4 inlets and 2 outlets... and potentially 4 cannister filters running off two pumps.

The pipe is 150mm PVC and all the fitting sizes will be gauged off my current cannister filter.

You intake pipes will work on gravity... and once enough water is in there (via my own mouth suction i suppose) the pump will act as a vortex.

The charcoal, sponge and cermic media will all be removable (very basic) and easy to clean.

All the inlets and outlets will have valves on them so the water flow can be slowed down and stopped when i wish to disconnect and clean.

The only problem that i can think of so far is the size of the pumps and wether or not they will fit inside 150mm pvc tubing? will have to look in to it.

one suggestion if i may:
looks like you will have room to put in a heater or 2, so as to avoid having them in the tank. Snip of the plug, drill a 5mm hole and feed thru the cable, then seal with silicon and wire on a new power plug.
I just like to avoid seeing the heater if possible...

good idea.... but i am a bit concerned if the pump fails and the thermestat happens to fail.... while im not home there will be alot of water on the floor!
although i will look in to it

if you have it connected to an overflow, rather than a syphon, it will only get water into it when the pump is running - and have the heaters way down the bottom so they will always be in water...
