Hi All,

I had to make one on the weekend because like most of you, there is never enough tank space and I thought I might as well take some photos. Its not hard or complicated but just thought I would share..

STEP 1:
Get the materials ready. Have it all there, just makes it easier. I had already cut the fly screen to size and the container is $3.80 from the storage section at bunnings (Thanks Hydonia).

STEP 2:

I know the photo isnt very good but place a thin bead of silicone (Vebas ~$7.50) around the edge of the holes you wish to cover..

STEP 3:

Place the cut peice of fly-screen over the holes making sure that it touches the bead of silicone all the way around. Once in place, run your finger over the bead like you are squashing the silicone with the fly-screen. This creates a better hold. Once done should look something like this.

STEP 4:

Repeat this process on all sides and the fry saver will be taking great shape.

STEP 5:

No thats done you need to make it float. This is where I put some thought into it. Most frysavers I have seen have been great but they dont allow for surface flow. I cut the polystyrene so that when placed in the tank, the water level would be half way with all of the holes around the edge. This allows good water circulation and stops a film forming on the top, inside the frysaver. I didnt take photos of this process because a got a bit excited and forgot but below is the finished product and you can see what I have done.

This particular frysaver is already in use but I reccomend waiting 12 hours before use.

Hope you get some use out of this.

Thanks
Bobbyfish

Thanks for the feedback. Glad someone got some use out of it. Since making these I have also seen the containes at KMART for about $0.60c cheaper. Makes a difference if making a few.

Thanks

Hi
You mentioned you purchased the silicone from Vebus... does it have to be a special type/brand?
Thanks

There is a silicon for use with aquariums you can buy from bunnings.
It is....
Selleys Glass Silicone

BTW bobbyfish, I made 2 of these and they are working a treat! thanks for the post!

No probs, glad to hear they work well for you.

Bunnings may have it but I try to support the local fish shaops and also I know 100% that the silicone is safe, dont trust dodgy asian labels.

Thanks

Nice clean looking savers Bobbyfish.

Bummings might sell it, but it is not as good as the silicon from Vebas, Aquotix & others.

Cheaper is not always cheaper in the long run.

In that case it is different.

I've found with the selleys it's good while the fry saver is in the water. Held together well for months of continuous use .... But once you take it out and it dries the flyscreen and foam falls off. So maybe there is something to what Col is suggesting...

I bought the silicone from Vebas as it is what they use for their tanks. If it holds a tank togather for 10years plus under pressure, It should have no worries with some foam and fly screen.

Thanks
Bobbyfish
